Anti-vax nurses? Are you serious?

Published

We were discussing the Disneryland measles outbreak at work, and I was appalled to find some of my co-workers refuse to vaccinate their kids. They (grudgingly) receive the vaccines they need to remain employed, but doubt their safety/necessity for their kids.

I must say, I am absolutley stunned. How can one be a nurse and deny science?

As a nurse, you should darn well know what the scientific method entails and what phrases such as "evidence based" and "peer reviewed" mean.

I have to say, I have lost most of my respect for the nurses and mistrust their judgement; after all, if they deny science, on what premise are they basing their practices?

I could post citations as well, but I'm not going to. Because I'm not trying to convince anyone here.

I will NEVER follow any government including my own with blind faith.
I definitely agree with this and I agree that its important to question everything! But a good way to check on the appropriateness of the CDC recommendations is to look at what other countries do, who are not under the jurisdiction of the CDC. As far as I'm aware the vast majority of countries are in agreement regarding vaccines. Does this help alleviate your concern?

Good thing you're not trying to convince anyone here b/c I can assure you I'm not convinced.

I wonder if they really look at their logic. They hate the idea of a risk of autism. But there is also a risk of death from the actual disease. Makes me want to ask them: Do you hate autistic kids so much you'd rather have your child die than be like them?

I don't think it's a matter of hating autistic kids. I think that we would almost all prefer a healthy kids, but we differ on how best to achieve this.

If you have not checked out Alex Jones' Infowars.com or prisonplanet.com, you can learn more there about vaccines, chem trails, creationism vs. evolution (which is still not proven, which is still a theory), and other news of our day from a refreshing, non MSM viewpoint. Keep an open mind, don't laugh too much at other people. They could turn out to be right.

That is exactly the danger in correlation compared to causation.

I bet I can graph the increase in AI diseases compared with the increased use of the Internet, increased yoga, increased use of television, increased outsourcing of jobs to India, increased membership of allnurses.com, etc and have a similar correlation.

If you can correlate all of that, correlation must not be too right-on.

No, but I did have to refer you to a cite that was easily available to anyone. So when people on a board make blanket statements, like that is not true, before doing your ones own research it simply shows…..

This seems to be a bashing thread of people that have concerns about vaccines. And they are valid…to a point. I just saw a FNP post something about a 20-25% effective rate it good, yet if you look here http://www.hrsa.gov/vaccinecompensation/dojpresentation.pdf you will see the Flu vaccine is not harmless to some people, otherwise the government would not pay for the damages it causes to some people.

Think…don't just repeat. That is all I am suggesting. Looking for research to support your own views is not evidence based, it is looking for validation.

Are you saying that I was being one sided based on the post you quoted? Because I happily ate my words two posts later. Otherwise, I'm really not sure what you're getting at. I am a person who considers all evidence, and I would this asking for the poster's resource would be evidence of that.

And I am suggesting that I don't spread lies, nor am I lair.

Seriously? I said it was not true because the last bulletin I read from the cdc indicated that the vaccine was carrying a 50% effectiveness rate due to about half of the tested strains of influenza A being the one with the antigenic variation. Clearly I was not up to date with the latest information but that doesn't make me a liar. I asked for the resource of that information so that I could know where the statement come from. And again, I gladly ate my own words because I was wrong. Not sure why you're getting this attitude toward me after that exchange.

Eta: I should also say that I am one of the people who did get the flu A with the antigenic variation after being vaccinated and I will line up for my flu vaccine next year anyway. You know why? The few patients I have had with influenza B and the other influenza As haven't been able to spread it to my other patients through me. I feel quite okay with my choice to vaccinate.

Brilliant

I swear, every frickin' time someone making unsubstantiated claims about vaccines is pushed and people call them on it, they can NEVER produce one shred of evidence to back up their claims

Well done on continuing that pattern

Okay, the gauntlet is thrown. I'm about to leave for work, but I'll be back this evening.

They might not be under the CDC, but they probably have a Central Bank and are run by billionaires who consider the mass of people on earth to be useless except as worker bees.

I hope people will look at some alternative viewpoints, but I kind of doubt that will happen. Young people especially today are so sure about evolution and everything else the authorities say. It is sad and it is scary.

I guess it's predicted, though.

JBudd, Canoehead, where are you & some others around AN who don't swallow things whole, who examine and exercise skepticism?
