Andrea Yates R.N.

Published

Did you know that Andrea Yates, the woman who is now being re-tried for drowning her 5 children in Texas was a nurse? I just thought it was interesting.

I know about denial. I've been there. Sometimes the demons are so strong that they are all you hear. The irrational thoughts in your mind feel like reality. Thankfully the medications that I'm on has helped me. However sometimes it's hard to obtain them because of cost and no insurance not to mention the stigma have having to take these drugs in order to remain sane and able to live a somewhat normal life.

I am a member of NAMI (local, state and national). I am also on the mental health advisory council for the state Protection and Advocacy Systems, Inc. Somehow because of the stigma, I cannot list my membership in these organizations on my resume or anywhere else. A person has to go through a selection process in order to be on P & A so being a part of this is an honor. Gay people have an easier time comming out of the cloest I think then the mentally ill. Just a few thoughts.

She was hallucinating and displaced from reality. Her "reality" was a nightmare that bore no semblance to real life. She was hearing demons (which she thought were real), thought she was possessed, etc.

How can she be held to the same standards as a sane person?

Just a thought here and maybe an ignorant observation on my part but having suffered from MI the very last thing on my mind was sex. I think her husband is equally to blame for continuing to allow her to become pregnant. Buy a box of condoms buddy.

Who? lol - clueless here...

I have to laugh, employment applications sometimes ask about "community involvement", between AA and MI I don't think they would be impressed!

lol made me laugh, what is it about listing mi or aa on an employment app that is so far out there? j/k some things are better kept to ourselves at least initially

i'm not too sure about that my sister is gay and she really struggles w/prejudices as well. she has experienced many situations in the work place (medical field) and in general, that supports the cold hard fact that people are not ready to hear about her lifestyle and accept the differences of choice.

i think that might have been why andrea yates and her family didn't reach out more to neighbors or her so called church family for more support and help on a daily basis other than just the professionals; the stigma of shame that goes along w/mi or alcoholism

Just another "problem" with society and mental illness being "treated".

Isyorke,

I was a health insurance broker for years. This problem is not specific to mental illness. The health insurance companies do not want to take on any individual (non-employer policy) insured if there is a known condition which will result in expenses. It's really not about mental illness, but just plain any old $$$. I've written policies for early retirees a few years away from medicare, with premiums in excess of $2500 per month - just because the applicant took Imitrex for migraines and no other health problems.

The entire system is broken. This isn't targeted towards those with mental illness though, regarding obaining individual health insurance. Think of it like this: would you wreck your car then go to State Farm and say "I'd like to get car insurance to fix this car." No. Unfortunately this is how health insurance works too.

It is broken! We, as health care professionals encourage people to seek treatment for their illnesses.. and then they get kicked in the teeth when it comes to getting coverage... so the treatment goes down the drain. arggg. don't get me started!!! And what about the person who goes on an antidepressant for a situational depression(or the myraid of things we order these drugs for)... down the line, sorry no insurance for you.
