Anatomy 2 & Chem or Anatomy 2 & Micro

Hi everyone!

I have not seen any recent posts on this topic but I am returning to nursing school and need some advice! I will be taking Anatomy 2 in the fall but and I need to take either Chemistry or Micro with it. Those will be the only 2 classes I will take and I will only be working part time. What class do you suggest I take with Anatomy 2 and why? I have not taken Chem since high school (6 years ago) and I am not planning on taking the basic chem before taking second year chem ( I received a waiver out of it because I do not have time to take it)

Thank you!

Take Micro! I'm not sure where you're planning on attending school, community college or university, but some schools don't require chemistry for admission or at all. You could start applying to those schools and take Chem if you don't get in or while you're waiting. Some people may say that Chem helps with micro and physio but I took both before taking Chem and never had any issue whatsoever. I'm taking Chem now and it's kicking my butt more than anatomy/physio/micro combined! Best of luck!

I think Chem and A&P2 would be better together, if you were good with Chemistry in high school. The reason I say that is, Microbiology is a tough course and requires a lot of time and effort, at least that was my experience with it. I took Chemistry and Micro at the same time, and it was tough. Chemistry is the easier of the two, and A&P2 should be a breeze for you if you did well in A&P1. Good luck!

Dang. Really?! Chemistry is kicking my butt so far. Luckily my professor allows 5 points extra credit per exam but damn, I feel like micro was a cakewalk compared to chemistry so far. I took Chem in HS and got an A. I'd be very lucky to swing a B this semester.

Yeah, there were a few professor's for Chemistry that were difficult, but I guess I got lucky and had a pretty decent one. Micro on the other hand, was torturous and I barely pulled an A in there, but a lot of people failed. I was literally in lab almost every day studying Micro and it paid off, but it really shouldn't be required because I have yet used anything from that course in my actual nursing classes.

In my opinion take Anatomy 2 and Chem. Chemistry is just understanding the problems. Anatomy is more of memorisation. I'm taking Micro right now and it's very difficult. Micro is a lot just by itself. Lots of organisms, slides, experiments. Understanding why you're performing the experiments and what happens to each organism. How diseases are transmitted, etc. I can't imagine taking this with another science.

I find that so funny. Both my micro and Chem professors were amazing. Micro was so patient and ready to help us at any chance we got, had a class set aside before every exam to review, open ended discussion and a kazoo(kind of like quizlet) we would review with . He was awesome. Chem professor is great too. Went to CalTech, knows his stuff inside and out and teaches extremely step by step. Has us repeat "it's not you, it's chemistry" when we're hating life. I honestly can't blame either professor for my current grades because I do think they've both are/were amazing. Just from my experience, I would take micro first simply because what I stated, some schools don't care about Chem but EVERY school wants micro. Might be able to dodge Chem if you get into one of those schools before you start/finish chemistry

I have found chemistry to be MUCH easier and more enjoyable than A&P. Haven't taken micro yet, but I have taken A&P 2 and chemistry really helped me to understand fluid/electrolyte balances and all of that. So I would say do chemistry with it! General chemistry also doesn't really involve a lot of memorization, it's more just solving problems and applying algebraic concepts. I mean, you have to learn and memorize a few things but it's nowhere near as bad as A&P!

I am taking Intro MicroBiology, basic Chemistry along with a college Algebra class. The chem is kicking my butt too. All my grades suffered this semester because of it. And today i just dropped chemistry. It's the math part of it that's thrown me.

I took Micro with A&P2, in addition to working part-time, and it was doable (I got As in both). That said, I'm a very science-minded person, so if I had to take English, History, and Art together I would probably fail. I took Chemistry w/ lab with three other nursing classes (med-surg, peds, and ethics) last semester and also got all As.

I would recommend A&P2 with Micro. I found that they complemented each other nicely. We had immunity in A&P, and bacterial diseases in Micro the same week.

I think it depends on you and your strengths and weaknesses. For me Chemistry is just a class I can't enjoy. I already have a Biology degree from years ago and took 16 credits of Chemistry required for my degree, 8 Gen Chem w/ lab and 8 O-Chem w/ lab. I also had Micro back then. Going back to school as a career changer and I'll have to repeat Micro because I took it too long ago to still count, also need Chem again for my back up school.

For me I'd 100% go for Micro before Chem. Micro was a cakewalk for me, plus I work in a biotech lab right now and actually DO micro testing when the primary micro person isn't here. Chemistry really isn't THAT hard either but I dread having to take it again... and I won't if I don't have too. It'll be one of those classes I'll list as taking in the Spring that I'll only actually take if I don't get into the nursing program I really want.
