An Atheist Nurse in King James Hospital

Published

Are there any other atheist nurses out there? How do you handle how religious healthcare is? I don't feel comfortable praying with a patient but I will find someone who is comfortable but the minute I say "I am not comfortable praying with you but let me go get you someone who can pray with you" and I go ask other people on the floor if they would pray with my patient I have been told everything from "just suck it up and fake it" to "I wish you atheists would quit trying to push your religion down our throats" to the other nurses saying I should be fired because this is a Christian (insert hospital or state or country).

i have never tried to convert someone away from their religion. There are not a lot off options since the hospitals in my area are St Joseph's, St Anthony's, Lutheran

You are not the OP so don't worry about it since it was directed to the OP not anyone else

I'm not worried.

This is an open thread.

Rhetorical. What would happen to one if one "fakes prayer"?

Seriously? Have you read any responses here? There aren't other options in the area per OP. And OP never said a word about *faking* prayer.

IF you are not the OP then don't worry about it. It was directed to the OP not you.

why do you care?

I'm not responding to you since this is not your problem and not your initial thread.

When a patient asks you to pray, it's not about you at all, it's about the PATIENT and his needs. He may be terrified and he needs that support. Just think of it as a placebo that will help your patient feel better. If you can't think of any appropriate words, ask a colleague or go online and find a little prayer. It WON'T hurt you. Kindness won't cost you a single thing.

No, it won't kill anyone, but I wouldn't ask a Christian to pretend to pray to Zeus because it would make ME feel better. That's just self-indulgent and rude to think I have the right to step on someone's beliefs (or lack thereof) for MY comfort.

I Never said The OP said that he or she faked prayer, OTHERS on this thread is telling the OP to fake prayer.

You should really PM her then if you want to keep it private.

Sorry, OP. :(

I never said I needed to have a private message with the OP. I think you should just be concerned about replying to the OP not others anytime you disagree with what someone says BUT if you like replying back to others so much then I suggest you try this thread, many weird responses for

Walking from school at night with deers and no street lamps?

Tell that person how full of........ bad stuff they are. I remember a story 'bout a mafia hit man that would get his cousins "blessing" after 'hitting' someone. You kill someone and are promptly forgiven for the 'sin' of murder. That's the thing with this particular brand of religion. It's never too late to go to heaven, because no matter what vile things one does throughout life, so the story goes, we're only human and therefore can have any and all sins expunged before dying. Therefore the RN that thinks only good believers are 'saved' is naive at best.

Quit and work somewhere else, Don't fake prayer because it may fire back on you. Just saying

I did not mean to thank!

I was trying to quote only and say "what". How would this lead to trouble? Unless the op was being snide or condescending or otherwise disrespectful, I don't think it would lead to trouble.

Unless,

Unleeesss....

Wait a second;

Maybe we are returning to the good old days.

The original post is anti-Catholic bigotry. I do not believe that this level of discrimination and harassment would be tolerated in the U.S.

The comment about sociopathic mafia hitmen was absurd. There are sociopaths in all walks of life who participate in religious services.

Praying with or for a stranger is not within my sphere of responsibility. It is within the sphere of that person's family, friends, and place of worship. I leave the room when the clergy person leads the family in prayer. It is their moment, not mine.

To me, asking heathcare workers to pray for a stranger rises

to the level of superstition. As if God will listen to Maggie because she's a nurse and I want everyone praying for me so I get what I want.

Most people can guess what my personal convictions are but

it doesn't mean that I am willing to share that part of myself with a stranger. Nor do I want to be a substitute clergy person for someone who has not attended their church in forty years.

I Never said The OP said that he or she faked prayer, OTHERS on this thread is telling the OP to fake prayer. See that's the problem with nosy people as yourself, You are sitting her replying back to me when you should only be replying to the OP, I'm replying to the OP only not you since this doesn't concern you.

That's... not how forums work. It's an open conversation, not a Q&A.
