An accelerated BSN I can get into with 3.0 GPA?

Hi all,

First time poster here. I'm a 28 year old male who graduated college in 2005 with a communications degree. I plan on applying to accelerated BSN programs starting in January. My undergraduate GPA was a 2.95, but with my prerequisite grades so far: B+ in statistics, B+ in A&P 1, B in Chemistry 2, A in Chem 1, A- in A&P 2, A- in Human Growth and Development, it should be slightly over a 3.0 when I do apply.

My question is...what are some schools I should be looking into that would accept me with that kind of a GPA + those prerequisite grades (approx a 3.55 on the prereq's)? I live in Massachusetts, and I'm open to anywhere on the east coast really, Texas, Arizona, California as well - really, anywhere I can get in.

Any one who can help me out or offer up some advice...it would be MUCH appreciated! Thanks!

What on earth makes you think a 3.0 is something that could prevent your acceptance into a program? I am not being sarcastic, I just don't understand. In my state standards are SUPER high and I have researched many, many BSN programs and only one requires a 3.0...Many, actually most, will accept you with a 2.5! I have not yet come across a program requiring higher than a 3.0. That is a great GPA, you should be proud of it. Good luck to you.

many accelerated programs in pa will accept 2.75-3.0 or higher. good luck in following your dream.

We all want higher GPAs. And to be wealthy, drive nice cars and live in big houses. And be healthy. Some things in life we can change. Somethings we cannot. GPA is one of those things that stays forever "stuck."

I think the other posters are absolutely correct. Nursing programs will accept you. There is more to your application than a GPA (letters of recommendation, a personal statement, some sort of standardized exam, a CV/resume). Oh, alright. I had about the same undergraduate GPA as you (I also have a PhD in Molecular Genetics with a much a higher GPA) and got into the first 2/3 schools I applied to and one was in PA! I did call the schools I was interested in to find out if sending in my application would be a waste of money. All the schools in PA were very encouraging. GET YOUR APPS OUT! If you don't apply, you can bet for sure you won't get in. Good luck.

and many will weigh your prerequisites/last 60 credits more heavily than your overall gpa. i got in with a 3.18 cumulative which included a 2.75 undergraduate gpa plus great prerequisite grades.

Hello All,

Thanks so much soxguy for posting this! I have thought about giving up nursing school because of my prereqs and GPA. I have a 3.2 GPA for both my undergrad and Master's Degree. Right now my prereq GPA is 3.0. Not sure if I can get into any affordable ABSN programs. I am already $60K in debt from undergrad and grad school.

I'm wondering if this seems like a worthwhile venture :(

Have you tried Lawrence Memorial/Regis? They have an adn program but you can move on to an msn I believe with a prior bachelors degree.

You should try ECU or UNC-chapel hill in North Carolina. They are real good colleges with pretty good nursing programs. ECU, although a party college, is quite easy to get into and definitely look at character and improvement in grade rather than GPA.

best wishes!
