Soul Searching. I believe it is the right decision but...
Hello everyone. I am a mother of two at the age of almost 35 (in 3 months). My son was born 8 weeks early and he stayed in the NICU almost for a month. He had a shunt surgery due to Hydrocephalus whenhe was two weeks old. It was a very hard time for me and my husband. He is our second child and I had my 17 month old daughter at home during these hard times. His shunt was removed when he was 6 months old. Today, he is a healthy 2.5 old boy who makes me feel blessed. We are so fortunate that after what we have been through he is doing wonderful. Why am I telling you all these? Well...After we came home from the hospital, and as I was taking care of this little premie for months, I started thinking about becoming a nurse. I had to go to the hospital for my son's doctor's app. all the time and everytime I was there i stared feeling that I wanted to be at the hospital:) It sounds weird I know. As a mother who has been through hell I should hate the hospital environment, right? Not me:) So, the idea of becoming a nurse started to make sense to me more and more everyday. Three months ago I lost my job (and I believe everything happens for a reason), and I have decided not to look for another job in my current profession and go after my dream of becoming a nurse. At the moment, I am volunteering at a children's hospital in the NICU department ( that's where my son was and I sometimes go into the room where he stayed:)). I am taking my prerequisites. I do not know when I am going to take the actual nursing classes yet (maybe 2013 or 2014, waiting for kids to get a little bit older) Now here is my question. I know some of you will say that I am the one who will make the decision but I am going to ask it anyway. Am I doing the right thing? I am changing my career. I am scared. I am 35. I am afraid that I will start going to school and finish it and start working and regret the decision. On the other hand, I see myself there. I see myself being the nurse at the NICU (as I am volunteering I watch the nurses all the time). I see myself successful in being the nurse. It is like seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. It feels like I found the purpose in my life but yet I am scared because it is a totally different career. I am also scared of all the horror stories that i read here:) But again, the days that I volunteer, I use every opportunity to get into the patients room and watch the nurses. i was at the ER the other day for my son (he had a little accident) and I was there watching them putting the staples in his head. i was watching the doctor as he was removing the staples in the office a week after that. I was watching because I wanted to see how he did it. I was curious. And now I want to volunteer in the ER department as well to see more patients. What I am trying to say is all these things are a good sign right? I am in the right direction right? Thank you all in advance. I hope somebody will write to me. maybe someone who has been in the same boat as me.

Delaware County Community College, PA Day Program students, graduate
Thank you so much for the information. Have you found a job after you graduated? Are you planning to go back to school for your BSN?

West Chester University RN to BSN program
Thank you so much. I really appreciate this. I think I am going to take the ADN route and do it in two years and get the BSN later. I do not want to sacrifice my kids in this process. ABSN programs look very intensive. I am afraid if I take that route, I will not see my kids for 18 months and I do not want to do that. I will get my BSN eventually. And I know it will take longer this way but with two little kids and no family support I think this is the best option for me. Did you take AP 1 & 2 in DCCC? Who did you take it with? Which Campus? Was it very hard? Is it only memorization? I am so happy that you are helping me with all these questions. You have two little kids and you have been in my shoes when you were making the decision to take the ADN route or ABSN route. Thank you again:)

West Chester University RN to BSN program
Hi again for all your time. I really appreciate this. How was the homework load? Did you have to study everynight pretty much? You had two kids at the time. How did it feel? Were you ok? How were the tests? Quizzes? Were there research papers? Did you have time for your children? i just want to get a sense of how it will be when I start school. I am trying to prepare myself as much as I can:) I will be done with all of my classes when I am taking the nursing classes. I do not want to deal with any other class when I am having the clinicals etc. How were the clinicals by the way? Which hospitals did you go?

West Chester University RN to BSN program
Can you tell me the schedule at DCCC? What time did the classes start? And the clinicals? How many days a week? Were you done most of the days before 3:00 pm? I have a 2 year old an a 4 year old and no family support other than my husband. I do not want to sacrifice my kids while I am going to school. That's why I am not going to an ABSN program. I know I have to study hard but I am not afraid of that. By the time I start school my oldest will be in kindergarden. Thank you so much for your help:)

One more question. How many days a week do you have to go to school for the BSN @ West Chester University?

Thank you so much for your reply. How was your experience with DCCC? Did you go to daytime program? What was your score on TEAS? I am going to take AP I and AP II next fall and apply for 2013? How was your overall experience? Have you found a job after you graduated?

West Chester University RN to BSN program
Hello everyone. I am planning to go to DCCC ADN program and after finishing it have my BSN in West Chester University. For those for you who had their RN to BSN in West Chester University, did you have to take chemistry, Microbiology, biology, statistics, nutrition etc etc.? or you just took the two courses and were done in a year after you got your RN? Nursing will be my second career. I already have a BS in another field. I may go for a ABSN program but due to their schedule and intensiveness (I have two little kids), I will take the ADN route and have my BSN later. Any help is appreciated.

RNs that have children aging from 2-18 years old
Hello all. I am taking my prerequisites at the moment and getting ready to apply to nursing school. Nursing will be my second career. I am 34 and I have a 2.5 year old and a 4 year old. My children are small. And I have no family support other than my husband. I made my mind and I am going to finish my school and become a nurse. I am planning to start school in 2013 Fall when my oldest starts kindergarden. I have the option to go to ABSN program or an ADN program at a local community college. I think I am going to choose ADN program even though I have a BS degree in an another field due to the intensiveness of the ABSN programs. With two little kids and no family support it would be very difficult to be in an intensive program. I would rather take my time have summers off and finish the ADN in two years and get the BSN later. I really do not want to sacrifice my children as I am fulfilling my dream of becoming a nurse. Am I thinking right here? Also, for those who have little children and who are already working in the field: How do you do it with your kids? I am especially interested hearing from nighttime shift nurses with kids? How do you handle it? Is it doable to work night time and have kids at the same time? I am asking this question because when I graduate from the nursing school, I think it will be very hard to find a daytime hospital position as a new graduate (maybe I am wrong). I would love to hear from all of you who have kids. And last of all, I am starting to volunteer tomorrow morning at a local children's hospital's NICU department. Wish me good luck! and thank you all in advance!

A&P I and A&P II - need suggestions
Hello everyone. I am taking my prerequisites for the nursing school. I am planning to take A&P I in Spring 2012 and A&P in Fall 2012. Is it ok to take the summer off in between the two sections? Or should I take them back to back? Also, I am planning to start the nursing school in Fall 2013. Is it too early to take A&P? Thanks for all of your help.

English As a Second Language
Hello all. English is my second language and I am working on getting into a second degree BSN program. For those who have studied and passed the certification exam, was it very hard to do with English being your second language? I graduated from a 4 year college in the USA but I was thinking maybe nursing would be harder for a person whose native language is not English. I would love to hear about your experiences at school if your native language is not English. Thank you!
