OK, so I need some advice. I'm very seriously considering my second career as nursing. I'm 45, and am very successful in a marketing position. I'm burned out and have always wanted to be a nurse. My background is business. I have some college level science, but I pulled my transcripts and need to take about 8 courses to get my prelims in. I'm enrolled in classes this spring, will still be working full time and am nervous about balancing work and school. My husband is very supportive, and wants me to do what makes me happy. My goal is to enroll in a masters for non-nursing in Summer of 2012. I'll graduate with a masters and can take the RN test. Am I too old to do this? I would graduate in late 2013 ( six semester program) at age 48.
Would really appreciate any advice and if I can realistically have a second career at nursing at this age.
Thanks!
Hey: I graduated in 09 at 49, my husband just graduated 2 weeks ago at 65! He also received the Kathryn Courtney award for excellence (she is the lady who started the school) and already has a job lined up for June. It is never too (old or late) to do anything. We did it and so can you.! Go for it. Good luck and God bless.
If it makes you happy then do it. Remember you only have one life so live it to the fullest. I had a lady in my human development class is she was in her 50s and she said she was tired of sitting at a computer all day at work and wanted to be a nurse. She got accepted into the 2 year program at my community college at the time...its possible and youre not crazy! Many people want to do this and feel as you do and dont persue it...dont live with any regrets (:

I know this is an older post but my comment is what would you be doing at 48, otherwise? You'd have to be doing SOMETHING in 2013, right? Is this something you really want to do? Go for it!

I started prerequisites for my ADN Nursing program at age 48 and passed my boards right after I turned 51. Six years later, I still LOVE what I do and have never, ever regretted my choice. Sometimes I wish I'd done it sooner in life but at other times, my life experience coupled with the newness of this career has made me a very unique "specimen" in the field: old enough to bring more to the table but still new enough to feel so very blessed to have the opportunity to do what I do. I work on a very busy medical telemetry unit and also work per diem on a cardiothoracic surgery unit and have no plans to retire any time soon. Go for it and don't let your age even be a factor. You'll know soon enough if this field is right for you - and if it is, why not work at something meaningful and rewarding while helping others when their life is probably at it's most challenging? It's hard, hard work but I continue to learn something new each and every shift while caring for some incredible folks and their families. Working with lots of younger nurses has it's own perks too ... their dedication, enthusiasm, compassion and work ethic makes you believe that many young adults have their heads on straight and are working to make our world a better place too. It's very refreshing and makes me smile ... Best of luck to you!

I started my prereq's when I was 50 and I graduated RN ADN when I was 53 almost 54 so age is not an issue and I have to say I have never regretted my decision at all and I wasn't the only one in my class that was my age or older and we all graduated together--just remember age is just a state of mind thats all

It's your life and you only live once. Live every moment to the fullest. We all have an experiation date that is unknow. You could live to be 100+ years! Who says life has to end at 50? I am in my mid 30's, full time worker, mother of three, married for 14 years, and managing to take 3 classes every semester with no break. If I can do it.....bygollie, so can you! Just do it!
