I have been a nurse for about a year and a half now in a acute long term care unit. I love my job, but ER is my dream job. I am an extremely fast learner. An ER spot just came open at my hospital and I'm torn as to whether I should go for it. I have TNCC and ACLS, as well as some other certifications that may help me stand out. Any experience from anyone who jumped to ER quickly in their career?
I can't think of any reason why not. Good luck!!
Go for it. While i was in school i dreaded med-surg. I did my preceptor in ER. Only 3 people from my class got selected for that department. I dont know if I got selected because they believe it matched my personality but I'm glad they did. The ER was very different from med-surg and tele (which was what my school focused on) and I knew that that is where I wanted to be. I applied to only ER positions as a new grad against the advice of many nurses. You have to go for what you want to do. After about 30 applications to different ERs I finally got a position. I would not want to start anywhere else. My goal is ER for a couple years and move on to critical care. Then in the future, do transports.
