Alzheimers nurses

Published

I had my clinical rotation Thursday at an upscale LTC facility in the Alzheimer unit and much to my surprise, I loved it. Any one work in that area that can give me some insight on how it is to work that field? I am seriously considering it when I graduate nursing school. Thank you for information.

I moved your post to the LTC Forum where you should get more responses.

I just wanted to say that when I worked in the Alzheimers unit when I was a SNA I thought it was a dream job. I liked the nurses, the pt's and the environment. :) Just thought I would give your message a reply. Maybe others will post their experiences here and be able to answer your question.

I am a alzheimers nurse and cant see myself working anywhere else. It can be very challanging because most of your patients have varying degrees of confusion. I have worked at my job many years and know all the patients most of them trust me and I can get them to do whatever needs to be done. They can be combative and irrate but your would to if you were confused thinking it was 1950, FDR was the president and your husband was due home any minute and the dinner wasent on the table. Not that all patients are like this but i ran across this this weekend...lol. It is totally different than geri/ltc nursing , you have to learn a different communication, methods of convencing and gain lots of patience...good luck to you..

I had a small taste of it and I loved it. I felt as though it was where I was suppose to be. I have always loved the elderly. They are so loving and have such stories to tell. One of the clients who couldn't speak saw me and her eyes lit up and she started crying. It touched my heart. I know it will be quite a challange. It will take a lot of patience and love. Thank you for the reply.

I work with Alzheimer’s Unit in Assisted Living as a CNA. I truly love the job. It can be hard a lot of times and very emotionally taxing. My heart breaks every time I have a resident who is in a panic because they don’t know who or where they are. Last night I had a lady who was absolutely frantic because she woke up and couldn’t find her preschool aged children. I can’t imagine the terror she was living thinking her young children were in such danger being lost. The most rewarding part of the job is when you’re with someone who is lost and confused and you’re able to make them feel safe and not so lost and scared and you’re able to form a bond of trust. It’s those times that I am exactly where I want to be.

I also love that no two nights are ever the same.

I love the Alzheimers unit. :lol2:

It has it positives more than its negatives.

I work as an RN at an assisted living Alzheimer's facility. I absolutely love it. I have worked there for 90 days and wonder what took so long to find my niche. I love the nurses, care staff and most of all the residents. :redbeathe
