How are the working conditions? Any advice on getting a job at this hospital? Thanks!

hi peaceful,

I'm actually going to work for summit alta bates. I've only recently discovered this chat. Were you able to find any information on the pros and cons re: Oakland or Altabates or Summit?

How are the working conditions? Any advice on getting a job at this hospital? Thanks!

Do you mean Alta Bates in Berkeley? I have never worked there, but as a student I had clinicals there. Patients seem to like the hospital, but as a student, I didn't really see the nurses working well together. None of them hardly smiled, or talked to each other like they were happy to work together. That might just have been because they didn't like students there, but that's the vibe that I got. My brother also did some contracting work there, not as a healthcare worker but as a tile setter and he said that it seemed like everyone hated their job there. The parking situation sucked. I had clinicals at Summit in Oakland as well. Loved being there - would want to work there for sure! Anyways - not sure if that helps you out too much, but that's just my opinion.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. You are probably right on with your vibes about nurses working together & not smiling. Usually this is a big clue. Tell me any other info you have on Bay area hospitals if you get a chance. Which ones you liked, ones that are hiring, any info....

I have heard good things about the Nursery ICU in Oakland, but not the rest of the hospital..............

i got a job offer at alta bates (stroke unit) and i verbally accepted their offer...i just have to write my nclex and get my visa screen approved before i go..hopefully by april 2005...any other info about alta bates would help....by the way, work conditions from one unit doesn't always reflect the work environment on another unit....i hope there will be some wards with a positive work environment!!

Peaceful - I just sent you a PM

Hi,

Well, it has been a trying experience with Summit. I am just waiting on my Cali license, but I am no longer with Summit. I have had so many questions and asked the recruiters to help me, but they have been giving me the run around. I guess they don't really need nurses until Arnold's law is in effect in July 2005. I don't want to wait that long, so I will look for a job somewhere else. I feel like I was strung along and so I don't trust them to help me in the process. They seemed to be rushing me in the fall last year and neglected to be honest with me by the end of the year. I was ready to move to Oakland in Jan and I had made arrangements. I just needed to do the walk thru in Sacramento, but the recruiter told me that I couldn't come until I actually had my Cali license. So she advised me to cancel my flight. Everything went to hell because I had given my resignation to my jobs here. Hopefully you'll have better luck. Be careful.
