Why hello there, fellow students!
You can call me Cedeno, and I'll be applying for the MDC nursing program for fall 2013! I've been excited for awhile now, especially since MDC (and all its red tape) has delayed my intended apply date twice (originally Fall 2012, then Spring 2013). Ah, but no worries!
Right now I'm taking my last bit of classes before applying: A&P 2 w/lab, Micro, and Critical Thinking/Ethics. I've seen many nursing students this semester-- which is wonderful-- but at the same time I think two words when I meet another pre-nursing student: "Awesome! " and "Competition!
" (Not seriously, but in a jokey kind of way.)
Once admitted, I'd love to form a study group. Size isn't quite so much the priority as cohesiveness is (though size counts!). I'd love study mates who like to utilize chats like Google talk, Skype, Kik, etc. for times when perhaps we'd like to study something but cannot make it to a physical location.
I'm a visual and auditory learner, so I love highlighters, dry-erase boards, and discussing questions together to ensure everyone understands rather than one person offering up the answer and others just accepting it without knowing.
Ah! I've managed to turn this into an ad for study mates! I'm just excited and hope there are other potential classmates here on AN. Please pop in and say hello! Let's talk GPAs, TEAS scores, whatever!
....Also if you take the TEAS twice is it highest score used or last test taken?
GOOD LUCK!
Stats:
Expected final science GPA: 3.67
TEAS score: n/a
So I have some news everyone. I went to the Medical campus bookstore yesterday and tried to get some info on the books for the Fall. The lady informed me that she has not gotten the official list and was informed that the may be changing the books for is upcoming year... Which sucks! She said they won't have the official book list and the books till around mid June... just FYI...
Hello all. I posted at the beginning but just to recap, GPA 3.6 TEAS 86% Competitive score 87 applied for Generic Full time and AO. I just wanted to tell everyone my experience while handing in my application. I asked the advisor if he thought my grades and score were competitive enough to give me a chance and his exact words were, "Oh, don't worry about it, you getting in. They will probably call you to see which track you want. That is what they did with me anyway." That made me feel so much better, so any one out there with a similiar or better competitive score, I think we can breathe easy.
@mommyhayes Thank you so much for your insight. My first choice is the AO program and I have some questions I can't seem to get a straight answer on. I am a mother with school aged children. I am worried about finding childcare before and after school. So my questions are:
a) are the classes and labs during the day? (Can you give me an example of a time frame)
b) how many days a week do you go to class?
c) how many days a week do you do clinicals?
d) During which times are clinicals available for AO students? (I've heard 7a-7p, 7a-3p, 3p-11p)
e) Are AO students allowed to choose weekend clinicals?
Thank you
I was told by an advisor and current students that it is only 4 days a week (yay!)...2 days of clinical and two days of class. That day off during the week is amazing, especially for those planning to work during the program...I hope they keep the schedule this way. The times vary, but I remember being told that classes start at 8.

And a couple more things after looking at the threads...
AO program...sorry to say but there is no "avoiding bad professors". In AO you get what you get what you get because there is only one class of AO students. The first semester is absolute hell!!! 21 credits between end of August and mid-December. You WILL have NO life. Juggling many classes, skills and skills testing, and clinicals. And, if you're like me, where you're coming from no medical background at all, it will be tough.
As far as a book list. You could go to the MDC Medical Campus bookstore and ask any of the people who work there to direct you to the Nursing section. Every program uses the same books! If I were you, def check Amazon or Chegg first. You will save yourselves a lot of money. I would say that with the exception of the Fundamentals of Nursing and maybe the Pharmacology textbook, the other ones you will want to hang on to. There are things you will be forced to buy at the bookstore (skills supplies), but as far as the textbooks go, try outside resources first.
AO potentials....I would look into getting the textbooks as soon as you get into the program. At least start skimming the books/subject matter. There is a TON of reading that first semester!!!
