Why hello there, fellow students!
You can call me Cedeno, and I'll be applying for the MDC nursing program for fall 2013! I've been excited for awhile now, especially since MDC (and all its red tape) has delayed my intended apply date twice (originally Fall 2012, then Spring 2013). Ah, but no worries!
Right now I'm taking my last bit of classes before applying: A&P 2 w/lab, Micro, and Critical Thinking/Ethics. I've seen many nursing students this semester-- which is wonderful-- but at the same time I think two words when I meet another pre-nursing student: "Awesome! " and "Competition!
" (Not seriously, but in a jokey kind of way.)
Once admitted, I'd love to form a study group. Size isn't quite so much the priority as cohesiveness is (though size counts!). I'd love study mates who like to utilize chats like Google talk, Skype, Kik, etc. for times when perhaps we'd like to study something but cannot make it to a physical location.
I'm a visual and auditory learner, so I love highlighters, dry-erase boards, and discussing questions together to ensure everyone understands rather than one person offering up the answer and others just accepting it without knowing.
Ah! I've managed to turn this into an ad for study mates! I'm just excited and hope there are other potential classmates here on AN. Please pop in and say hello! Let's talk GPAs, TEAS scores, whatever!
....Also if you take the TEAS twice is it highest score used or last test taken?
GOOD LUCK!
Stats:
Expected final science GPA: 3.67
TEAS score: n/a
Hi all,
i'll try to answer the ?'s directly related to AO. Generic's schedule is much different.
I also have two small children and was able to get it done in AO but with a lot of help! I'm in my last semester, so I'll try and give you the breakdown by semester:
1st 1/2 of first semester (going by memory so forgive me!):
You spend the first 4-6 weeks in skills lab, learning everything you need to know to go to clinicals. You will also have to pass one "return demo" for skills before your first clinical. The return demo test is: everyone gets tested on vitals and one random skill you pick out of a hat (O2 admin, enemas, etc.). You have a couple of shots to pass this test, which you have to do to move on and to go to clinicals.
The first 6 weeks from a lecture standpoint is: Fundamentals, Pharmacology Math, and Physical Assessment. You will be in class if I remember correctly, everyday in some form or fashion the first 6 weeks, between lecture and skills. Somewhere in there you start clinicals at the Nursing home and hospital, two days a week 8 hour shifts.
2nd 1/2 of first semester:
You will be in class for lecture Mon. and Fri. for lectures on Med Surg and Pharmacology. There will also be skills lab in there somewhere for medications. You will also have a return demo for medication administration at the end of the semester. Clinicals are two days a week, each shift is 8 hours.
The last four weeks of the semester, you will only have Med Surg lecture 2x/wk and clinicals 2.x per week.
2nd semester:
You will take one month each of OB, Peds, and Psych. Each has 2 lectures per week. OB and Peds have (1) 12-hr shift of clinicals per week, and Psych has (2) 12-hr shifts per week.
3rd semester:
Advanced Med Surg is 6 weeks. 2x/week lecture Mon & Fri (8-12) and (2) 12-hr shifts of clinicals. (Right now I have weekend clinicals at Ryder/Jackson, so I'm in lecture until 12p on Mon & Fri, and then in clinicals all weekend 7a-7p).
Leadership which I believe is the same schedule as Adv Med Surg, but is only 4 weeks long.
Most clinicals are during the week either in the day or evening and Med Surg has a lot of weekend clinicals. Your times for the clinicals above are correct.
Sorry I couldn't just give you a list, but the classes are all over the place. I think Generic follows the same order, the classes are just overall, a bit longer!
Good luck :-)
Dayli- I was thinking the same. Just a month left, hopefully. For those of you with high scores, less than a month. Good luck everyone. I want it to be July already!
Mommyhayes - thank you so much! I believe I will choose AO as well if given the chance. I have a toddler and lots of family support, your feedback is making me think I can handle it. Thanks!
Hello everybody applying for full time I was checking the link they sent you when you get accepted and the dates until yesterday were for the spring 2013 and today when I checked what a surprise they posted the date for the fall 2013 please go to this link Generic FT - Medical - Admission Information - Miami Dade College
Awesome, thanks Dayli! I'm gonna start working on getting CPR certified.
@jessy926 I'm in West Kendall too! After pulling it up on Google Maps, I'm about the same distance from both campuses, give or take a couple miles. So not exactly sure where they will place me. Which campus do you want to attend?
Thanks for the link Dayli! I've checked that site a million times and was wondering when they would finally update it!
Marilyn - I was told by two different advisors (one at Medical Campus and the other at Homestead) that anyone south of Coral Way (SW 24 st) would be going to Homestead Campus. The traffic is minimal in this area, plus you will be going south when everyone is going north for work and vice versa. Parking is also great at Homestead Campus so cosider yourself lucky!

MaryOr...relax. There is no need in working yourself up. What will happen will happen. Don't make yourself miserable while waiting! I'm sure you will be fine. Many others from prior semesters have gotten in with "low" scores.
RedGyrl - I was also told by an advisor that it is 2 days of clinicals and two days of classes, but if you look a few posts above, that is a copy of my friend's friend's current schedule. I'm not sure if it is a little different bc it is summer, but I figured I'd share the info. And I wanted to thank you for the math break down you gave us in the last post. It definitely takes the edge off! :)
