Why hello there, fellow students!
You can call me Cedeno, and I'll be applying for the MDC nursing program for fall 2013! I've been excited for awhile now, especially since MDC (and all its red tape) has delayed my intended apply date twice (originally Fall 2012, then Spring 2013). Ah, but no worries!
Right now I'm taking my last bit of classes before applying: A&P 2 w/lab, Micro, and Critical Thinking/Ethics. I've seen many nursing students this semester-- which is wonderful-- but at the same time I think two words when I meet another pre-nursing student: "Awesome! " and "Competition!
" (Not seriously, but in a jokey kind of way.)
Once admitted, I'd love to form a study group. Size isn't quite so much the priority as cohesiveness is (though size counts!). I'd love study mates who like to utilize chats like Google talk, Skype, Kik, etc. for times when perhaps we'd like to study something but cannot make it to a physical location.
I'm a visual and auditory learner, so I love highlighters, dry-erase boards, and discussing questions together to ensure everyone understands rather than one person offering up the answer and others just accepting it without knowing.
Ah! I've managed to turn this into an ad for study mates! I'm just excited and hope there are other potential classmates here on AN. Please pop in and say hello! Let's talk GPAs, TEAS scores, whatever!
....Also if you take the TEAS twice is it highest score used or last test taken?
GOOD LUCK!
Stats:
Expected final science GPA: 3.67
TEAS score: n/a
OK I got the info: "You pick your own sequence" which I assume she meant schedule? This is her schedule:
Lab M 12-340 PM (Summer A)
Pediatric Nursing M + Th 8-1145 A (Summer A)
Obstetrical Nursing Clinical F 7 A - 6 P (Summer A) and Pediatric Nursing Clinical during the same time (Summer B)
Obstetrical Nursing M + Th 8-1120 A (Summer B)
Psychiatric Nursing Th + F 8 A - 12 P (Summer B)
Psychiatric Nursing T + W 7A - 6 P (Summer B)
I noticed there is an overlap in some of the times (Th Summer B)...I'm not sure what that is about. I also see that during Summer A she has two days off, which is pretty cool. Hope this helps!
I stopped by the nursing dept. today and also have some new info for whoever is interested. Full time will be classes/ skills lab 2 days a week and clinicals 2 days. AO classes/ skills lab 3 days a weeks and clinical two days. It really depends on the sequences we choose as to what days and what times are classes/ skills lab, but they will end no later than 6pm. As far as clinicals, the time blocks are 7am-3pm, 3pm-11pm, 7am-7pm. The longer shift will require fewer weeks. And weekend clinicals will also be available for AO, I'm sorry I didn't think to ask for FT too.
Thanks for all the info everyone! It really helps.
Mary, have faith that you will get in! My overall is 80 and I'm freaking out as well but just have faith!
If its of any consolation, I went thru the entire thread on this blog for Fall 2012 MDC candidates and the lowest overall that got in was 75. Of course , that was after 3 rounds of emails, but they still got in!
So just have faith and be positive!
Based on the post I've read from past years: First rounds of acceptance won't be until mid thru late June (scores high 80's and 90's). Second round July (low to mid 80's) and third round as late as after orientation (70's). MDC nursing seems to average 1000 application each Spring and Fall, but that doesn't mean 1000 applicants. Most people apply to more than one program.
Now I have a pretty decent competitive score, but I really tried to kick butt because the program I want AO and it only has 50 slots available, but I also applied to FT. FT looks to be the more popular program and has 150 spaces available. I say all that to say this, you don't really know who your competition is. Maybe others thought like me and tried to do really well to get into a more difficult program. Will all have hope and it will definitely be a long and torturous summer.
And take a look at this math. 1000 applications. There has to be a certain percentage of applications that really have no shot. Let's say 20%. So now we're down to 800 applications. Of those let's say on average a person applied to 2 programs. Now 400 applicants. Of those let's say 300 applied to FT and that is their 1st choice. There are 150 spaces so now your odds are looking a heck of a lot better.

Instead of talking to advisement, you can talk to someone in the nursing dept. I had questions about the times of clinicals and the advisor told me he really didn't have that information. On the Medical campus go to Building 2, third floor.
