Why hello there, fellow students!
You can call me Cedeno, and I'll be applying for the MDC nursing program for fall 2013! I've been excited for awhile now, especially since MDC (and all its red tape) has delayed my intended apply date twice (originally Fall 2012, then Spring 2013). Ah, but no worries!
Right now I'm taking my last bit of classes before applying: A&P 2 w/lab, Micro, and Critical Thinking/Ethics. I've seen many nursing students this semester-- which is wonderful-- but at the same time I think two words when I meet another pre-nursing student: "Awesome! " and "Competition!
" (Not seriously, but in a jokey kind of way.)
Once admitted, I'd love to form a study group. Size isn't quite so much the priority as cohesiveness is (though size counts!). I'd love study mates who like to utilize chats like Google talk, Skype, Kik, etc. for times when perhaps we'd like to study something but cannot make it to a physical location.
I'm a visual and auditory learner, so I love highlighters, dry-erase boards, and discussing questions together to ensure everyone understands rather than one person offering up the answer and others just accepting it without knowing.
Ah! I've managed to turn this into an ad for study mates! I'm just excited and hope there are other potential classmates here on AN. Please pop in and say hello! Let's talk GPAs, TEAS scores, whatever!
....Also if you take the TEAS twice is it highest score used or last test taken?
GOOD LUCK!
Stats:
Expected final science GPA: 3.67
TEAS score: n/a
Thank you Carissa!
I'm planning to work Full Time, I can't afford to lose my job not only because the income, but most important because of the benefits and also because it would be easier for me to get a job once I graduate since I'm already with the company as opposed to applying as a newbie somewhere else
Is anyone else paranoid that MDC misplaced your application? That's my worst fear! By the way, I'm going to be so upset if everyone on this thread doesn't get in!
CarissaHalo I would consider working very part-time if I did the Generic but I think I read somewhere on the college website that you will not be allowed to work while in the AO program. I plan on taking a student loan. Eeek!
I plan on getting a student loan as well. But I've heard that to get a loan after your bachelors degree you have to complete an appeal. Basically stating why you are pursuing another degree after graduating. The only problem is the loan won't take effect until the second semester so I have to pay out of pocket for the first semester. I've seen here over the past few weeks that current students have posted different amounts for what their tuition was the first semester. So I'm thinking of taking a small loan to pay for that.....I definitely am not going to risk working and failing out....so money will be tight for a while...
@bsartor - I would be going crazy also without this thread. I would feel like everyone else got acceptance letters already, especially because when I put in my application in February they told me June 1!Who is planning to work during the program?
I applied in February also and they told me the same thing that letters will go out June 1st.
@tati.lara75 I don't believe you have to go through such a tedious process to get loans as long as you have not used all your loan eligibility, you can get loans. Financial aid and scholarships are very unlikely for a 2nd degree. But for dependent students the max amount is $31,000 and for independent students or dependent students whose parents were denied the PLUS loan is $57,500. The max you can take out per year is $12,500 for third year and beyond undergraduates. So with that amount in loans and 3-4 thousand saved for extra bills, not having a job while in th AO program would be a little tight, but doable!! i in loanSo with
@diamondgirlfsu I went to MDC last week and financial aid told me that i had to go thru that appeals process even if i had not used up all of loan eligibility. They said i have to first be accepted and then start the loan application process. She said alot of people go thru that every semester. WHo knows. I guess I shall see how it all plays out.
@MaryOr - If you don't mind me asking, where are you working now? I'm sure everyone is going to recommend you not working during the program (including myself), but you know what you have to do. Just know what you are getting yourself into. Maybe you can consider the PT option?
@bsartor - I have that same fear! It's almost as if I am creating things in my mind to worry about. I was going to post that same concern a few days back, but I didn't want to scare anyone haha. I went really early to avoid the chaos of last-minute applications and I had a really thorough advisor who reviewed and submitted my application. Even though I worry about it a little bit, I am pretty confident it is in. Because they weren't busy in Feb when I applied, she even let me look at a list of how many people had a applied at that time (I saw my name at the end of the list so if my application is not there, then some major freak accident occurred!). In Feb there was about 60 FT generic applicants and about 30 PT applicants (I applied for both).
I plan to only work about 12-16 hours (two 6-8 hour days, depending on how many sick animals there are during my shift), but if needed, I can do one day a week. I have been considering the PT option so money isn't so tight, but I know I should just tough it out and do the faster FT program. I'm going to sit down and do a serious budget analysis tonight (probably for the 10th time).
Yikes! @tati.lara75 well if we have to go through the appeals process I hope it doesn't take too long to return with our awarded amounts. I know the lady told me that the loan app is available on June 17th and I need to know ASAP so I can make other arrangements if that amount is not awarded. Let the stress begin lol
CarissaHalo

@MaryOr - if you look on page 11, I posted my friend's generic FT schedule for the summer. During summer A she had 2 days a week off and during Summer B she had 1 weekday off. (The days are long though). The advisors told me that generally you have two days of clinicals and two days of classes. We pick our classes to some extent and you choose from classes M-F. You could probably have 4 days a week if you condensed your schedule or 5 days if you prefer your classes to be more spaced out.
