Already make $42/hr. Is travel nursing worth it?

Hey guys,

I want to take my family on an adventure via travel nursing. We really want to see the country and show our kids how great our nation is as well as have an adventure while the kids are young.

The dilemma: I make $42/hr as a float pool RN mainly working in the ER at a busy urban hospital in Florida. Plenty of opportunities for OT. My main worry is that I won't make as much or make just the same as I make now. What can I expect as a traveler pay-wise?

I've done a lot of reading and it all seems comparable to my pay now. Of course it will be exciting to travel but I worry it won't be financially feasible to leave my current job. What do you guys think?

Thanks in advance.

How long do you plan to travel? Where do you plan on living?(hotel, travel trailer, short term lease?) are you home schooling?

I am an OR nurse considering transitioning to travel. I have been doing research but there are a lot of agencies to chose from and a lot to consider. Any advice would be appreciated.

If you read just three threads here, you will read some pertinent advice.

Like how people says these things without saying specifics. where in florida one can make $42/hr? Florida is known to be one of the lowest paying states in all careers including nursing. In central florida 2017 pay average is $26/hr, you talking bout back in 2015 making $42/hr? seriously?

LOL. Maybe it was with Differential. ORMC in Orlando night diff was 10.50 at one point but I heard it was reduced. I knew a nurse working a FH as Assistant Nurse Manager making $42. I know float pool making that in NorthTexas on days.

few years back I interviewed with ORMC as new grad, there night diff was closer to $4.00/hr weekdays and $8/hr weekends. Maybe it was all weekend work? anyways let me in, guess its who you know but I wanna do 40 plus per hour...lol ...seriously considering travel nursing or hooking up with an agency. Tired of this low pay Florida crap!

I am talking about 2011. I believe the CEO from UF decreased it. I remember it was in the papers. Those nurses should of formed a union.

gssss! allnurses taking all these salary surveys...doesn't take a genius to see average nurse pay has not gone up in 20 or 30 years.

Seriously? In the last 20 years as a traveler I've progressed from $15 an hour to well over $50 an hour as a traveler. Where are you working with no increase in pay for 30 years?

While not in travel, nursing: A former employer at one time had an advertisement wherein they posted the pay range. By the time I went to them, within two years of first seeing the ad, they had dropped the range by $4/hr. Now, a few years later, the pay range is even another dollar lower. Sure I want to work for less than the wage I made twenty two years ago when I first started out. Glad to serve chips with that too.
