My name is Krista and I currently live in Missouri and I will be moving to Honolulu this Jan 2010 because my boyfriend will be working as an army nurse at Tripler. I am also currently applying to every RN job online and have a feeling that trying to get a Labor and Delivery job is going to be pretty tough. I currently have about a year of experience on a medsurge floor. I could use all the tips anyone has to offer!

Hi Kristen,

Don't get discouraged! It might take a little while to get acquainted to the Island. Just stay positive, and be nice to and friendly to everyone you meet. I don't really know about nursing advice, since I am not yet even accepted to nursing school, but that's just some advice about Hawaii. It can be hard to get hired untill you have some local references.

Specializes in Emergency.

Aloha!

I'm a new transplant on Maui, two weeks in and I feel right at home! I've been an ER nurse in the greater Boston area for 3 years, with 5 additional years in healthcare. I'm waiting (...and hoping) to hear back from MMMC to get started in ER, ICU, etc... new place = new experiences, I'm ready for it! In the meantime, enjoying the beautiful outdoors, weather, and culture here. I am totally impressed by Maui's heathcare initiatives going on. I am constantly seeing/hearing about health fairs, women and children's wellness events, the Association for Improved Healthcare on Maui... I definately need to get my volunteer hands in on this!

Specializes in Surgery.

Aloha,

I have just accepted a full-time position at Queens Medical Center in surgery. I have visited the islands many times and always knew that someday I would live there. Well, it happened sooner than I thought. I am actually going ahead of my family. My flight is on March 9th but I don't start orientation until the 16th. I agreed to use their housing accomodations and accepted the relocation assistance. The hiring process was rather quick. I am really excited about this yet nervous since I am leaving my family. When the house sells they will follow.

I play roller derby here in Oregon and look forward to skating with the Hawaii Rollergirls. I actually met them last Aug/Sept when I last visited. I met a medical student here in Oregon who lives downtown Honolulu and I know someone from my hometown that now lives in Waikiki. Other than that I know no one. This is going to be an exciting adventure! I am not afraid to be doing this alone, I love meeting new people and doing new things. Many of my friends tell me that I am brave to do this alone. I am a little nervous but I am sure I will be ok after a few days or weeks. I am a very friendly and positive person so I am really not worried too much.

I love different cultures and love the study of languages. My primary language is English, I can speak spanish, I can sign and am learning Japanese. So as you can see I have an interest in a variety of things. I really don't thing I will get bored being alone until my family can make the trip.

I am super stoked to be working at a large facility. I worked in Nashville at Vanderbilt for a few years and absolutely love the bigger hospitals. Not fond of all the call but it goes with the territory.

So, here is to new adventures and new friendships *wine

Julie

sounds as if you have everything in order. I am ready to start my new career once I get done with my clinical and once my fiance get done with her respiratory clinical hopefully she wants to move out there with me can wait to get back to the island.

Aloha!

I am glad I found this site hoping that somebody

would help me decide to take RN.

But my concern, I am small and I don't know if RN is the one for me.

Or after finish RN do I get a job?

Thank you so much guyz...

Hi..I've been looking for RN jobs here in HI for a couple months now. I've been applying everywhere, with no luck. I have 1.5 yrs hospital experience as medsurg float at Kaiser in the mainland. As the last resort, I signed w Altres Staffing just recently. Anybody works for Altres here? I appreciate any input. Thanks!

Specializes in Emergency, outpatient.

aloha, LL! Keep on trying; and sign up for multiple agencies if you need to. I used Altres and Island Nurses with success a couple of years ago; they both kept me busy and I could pick my own schedule. Keep in close touch with the schedulers and they are great!

Specializes in ER.

Hi everyone!

I've been searching job openings in all Hawaii hospital websites and see some listed as "continuous recruitment until needs are met"...seeing a fair number of listings.

I'll start applying now even though I won't be relocating til spring!

Luck to everyone!

anybody know about this nurse?

aloha~ i'm a rn working in honolulu. i fell in love with hawaii on a vacation trip long ago, while on vacation i place an application just for fun at the facility where i work. furthermore, within 3mo. i got a phone interview and been here since 2006, i'm still in love with hawaii and with my position. however, for those that haven't visit hawaii you must know that the cost of living is high here, since most of the things are imported. having said that, i wouldn't live or work any other place, it's like living in the state of paradise. lastly, every friday night there's a fire-works display celebrating the end of the week and welcoming the weekend, which my children love to watch every friday... aloha pumehana~
