allnurses mentioned in AJN and it ain't flattering

Aw, well. Who reads AJN? Nurses. And we know our senses of humor are off the wall sometimes; it's how we let off steam, live with stuff we see every day, etc., etc. The dramatic point the author tried to make in the end is laughable to any working nurse or anyone who even knows a nurse because they know how we talk and they know many of us have an abnormal/sick sense of humor at times/all the time, whichever. And if someone reads it, not knowing any nurses--well, they'll just think there's a couple of mean nurses out there somewhere. So I say...just carry on.

Actually, what bothers me about the article is: How many times have they taken other things out of context to fit their needs to qualify a point or for a more spiffed-up article--and can we really trust any of their information now?

in starting an IV on a death penalty case, and participating in abortion, late term or otherwise, or pulling the tube (ET or feeding) on a questionalbly brain dead patient? I see little distinction. They are all "legal" even if it may be immoral and repugnant to some.

I agree the article smacked of yellow journalism, and any respect I had for AJN is down the drain. It did not even begin to try to offer a balenced approach, the agenda was set in stone from the outset.

I refuse to participate in abortions, but I have cared for many with complications from one. I am pro death penalty, but I have cared for many in the ER who are prisoners. I give them all competant and compassionate care to the best of my ability. That is all anyone can ask, and that is all I can give.

So it's fine to starve Terri Schiavo to death but executing a convicted murderer is grounds for the revocation of your medical license. No wonder this country is headed the way of ancient Rome.

Admitting its very existance would only bring attention to the fact that the article in question has turned them into the "National Enquirer" of professional journals. I am curious if the author has been lurking since the article came out. Don't really care, just curious.

I would hardly call it "The National Enquirer of professional journals".

I truly doubt the author is lurking.

Why would you doubt that? We already know that the author has come to allnurses before looking for article content. Now, there's a thread that mentions the publication specifically. It would be only natural to check out what people are saying, and also only natural not to participate in the convo, given the strength of the sentiment against her article.

I have to agree. I feel badly that thread was used out of context to make nurses look bad. and I also agree it's quite an irony many of us feel ok about removing Terri Shiavo's feeding tube, starving and deyhdrating her to death, but then get all worked up about nursing possibly participating in carrying out the death penalty. Seems to me, we can't have it both ways.

Bit ridiculous, isn't it. So maybe it's time for all the doctors' and nurses' associations and boards to do some updating.
