Allnurses Hospital

Y'all have heard of "Doctors Hospital" before. Wouldn't it be great if we on "allnurses" could own, work in, and run our own hospital? What could be our slogan? ALLNURSES HOSPITAL: OUTSTANDING NURSES--OUTSTANDING CARE

any other ideas? It really would be great if we could all work together, I think!

And...an outpatient imaging center for me!

Specializes in floor to ICU.

Okay, I'm in! May we please have the patient rooms stocked with common supplies, linen carts and their own personal meds? Can housekeeping empty those linen carts and clean up actual body fluids, please?

Specializes in Med/Surg.

Where do I apply???

One of the hospitals I traveled to had just recently opened a new patient care building. They didn't renovate the old, but instead built on to the existing facility.

When they were in the planning stages, they had their nurses give input as to what would constitute the 'perfect' patient room and floor. And they actually listened and implemented their suggestions.

All rooms were private and large. Each room had a built in couch that folded down into a cot for family with storage space underneath for their linens, etc. Also plenty of storage space in the room to prevent clutter. There was double O2, suction, etc. over each bed with all gauges built in. Each room had it's own BP cuff and thermometer (although they did use dinamapps too). There was a huge bathroom with a shower containing a fold-down seat, both large enough for a large-sized wheelchair and multiple IV poles and equipment to enter and be inside with plenty of room to maneuver. Each room had 2 large sink areas, one in the bathroom and one as you entered the room. There were a number of rooms built specifically for isolation throughout the floor (huge ante-rooms with all PPE stocked), and if they were in use they did NOT place isolation patients in a regular room and "make do".

There was a large nurse server that could be accessed from both inside and outside the room. It contained all supplies, linens, admission kits, specimen containers, etc. There were also two drawers with push-button combination locks. One was for all patient meds (except narcs, of course) and the other contained all sizes of syringes and needles and such. The server was stocked daily by central supply, housekeeping and pharmacy.

The med rooms were centrally located, as were the dietary areas, utility rooms, etc. There were large closets on either side of the floor where tray servers were kept, so used dietary trays were out of sight (and smell lol).

The floor was divided into 'pods' (not sure how to describe it). For every 4-5 rooms, there was an alcove with charts, chart supplies, 2 phones and computers. Plenty of space to sit and chart, and yet be close to your patient rooms. Even though the floor was huge, there was very little time spent running back and forth, because everything was so centralized and right there where you used it.

Most importantly, everyone simply did their job. For example, when someone was discharged, housekeeping was there within minutes and the room and all equipment was cleaned. Aside from disposing of IVF, they did it all, including changing out needle boxes. They also rounded and replaced equipment in the soiled utility.

Where is this hospital??? that just sounds too cool!

Well, this would be a "true" magnet hospital, right? Not one of those hospitals that make you wonder how in the world they ever got magnet designation.

This is a great idea. Maybe it could even be marketed and sent to all the hospitals. Nah, they'd probably punish the nursing staff even more.

NoVA. I moved on not because of the staff (wonderful staff) or the supervisors/managers (some of the best I've worked with) or their set-up (awesome-- see above post) but because of their docs. They had this thing about not being there when we needed them. Wouldn't return pages for hours, if at all. We had patients crash and/or code and be sent off to the units and their docs wouldn't even know about it until the next time they rounded. It was stressful, to say the least.

I'll work in the ER.... if I can have a trap-door in the floor of the triage room!
