Now that the October issue of RN Magazine (supplement) is being delivered, I Just thought I would open a topic on what your thoughts of our magazine ad are. Like it? Love it? Hate it? Let us know what you think?

I loved it too...tremendous impact. I'm just not sure what I'm loving or why.

earle58. It's too late to stop YOU, you've already CHECKED out allnurses.com.That's the intent, to get people to come onboard the site. You read the toe tag, right?

Well, duuuuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhh. So then, what does this mean, dearest PPL... that reading allnurses.com knocks your socks off, hence, cold feet???? Or am I reading into this too much? Or who gives a crap. I get it now. But then again, it could mean many things to many people. Replace allnurses.com on the toe tag with PPL or PPD or any other name and it would truly be mystifying.

WOW! There's a chill in the air; my feet really ARE getting cold! Don't be mad earle58, I was just trying to help. Maybe I'm reading in too little? Anyhow, I really do love the ad though.

Look at my icon, I'm winking at you. I wasn't angry and apologize if it came across that way. I saw a dead person's feet with the attached caption and on instinct, didn't get it. There's alot I don't get and am usually the person who laughs at a joke 20 minutes after the punchline. And yes, I loved it too but still need to reiterate, I just don't know what I'm loving or why.

WWEEELLL....for me and please take this as for "me" only...it's what they did to our profession, I feel as if the life has been taken out of me....good nurses are dropping like flies, several more are hanging in there by a thread, new bright minds are looking else where for career choices...is nursing dead? the toe tag could mean the profession as a whole...I still thought this was excellent, shock value works.

I will tell you why it disturbed me. It brought to mind the last time I did post mortumn care. I had an overwhelming assignment. A nice elderly couple married 50 years were seperated by death that night. He was a hospice patient and a no code. He passed while I was wheeling a patient to ICU who had crashed, I also had a post op who was back for 30 min and had not had their vitals checked. A admission was waiting in the ER, another person was having chestpain and I had one to transfer to psych who was suicidal and needed watching. I saw the wife hanging on to the side rail wailing Richard, Richard! I did not go to her, I could not, my hands are shaking when I type this. The unit secretary, thank God there was one that night, called the family and the hospice nurse in, unfortunately the new widow, a woman of nearly 80 years was alone until they got there, she got very little from me. I will always hear that voice, Richard, Richard!

Oh shit, my heart aches for you, Oramar! What they have done to our profession!! That's why most of us went in to nursing - so we could be there for people at times like that (I'm thinking, too of my own parents who have been married 55 years, and what that poor woman was going through).

Hope you can get more satifaction from your new job. Your post makes me count my blessings, that I'm in homecare, where it's one on one, and I do have a chance to hold someone's hand most days.

As for the ad, my husband thinks it's awfully morbid, but I think you're right, it does speak to that quirky, dark sense of humor that most nurses develop after too many night shifts, too many deaths, and too much caffeine.

I liked the add it was decidedly dark but what would be more graphic and (oddly) funny would be a charge sticker left on the bottom of the foot. Been there, done that...

I am an RN with 25 years experience in a hospital setting. Two years ago, I wouldn't have thought twice about your advertisement, most probably thinking it to be funny.

However, in the last two years, I have become involved with the National Organization of Parents Of Murdered Children, Inc., www.pomc.com, not as a survivor of murder, but in designing and maintaining their web site and running their Second Opinion Services program. POMC is the only national self-help organization dedicated to helping the friends and families of those who have been killed by violence. Sadly, we have over 100,000 members throughout the United States and the number continues to grow daily.

Our organization has a program called the MINE Program (Murder is not Entertainment) which has successfully worked against violence in the media, in entertainment, and in print.

The purpose of the MINE program is:

MINE wants to eliminate the playing and marketing of violence and murder as forms of entertainment for both children and adults. The program strives to instill the same empathy and respect for victims of murder that society affords victims of other tragedies. Through education, crime prevention, and promoting an overall change of attitude, the MINE program drives home the message - Murder Is Not Entertainment .

Most recently, we were able to shut down the nationally televised program called "Confessions", featured on Court TV, in just two weeks. This show, for those who are not familiar with it, featured actual convicted murderers confessing to their crimes. Could you imagine being a survivor of murder, turning on your television, and seeing the murderer of your loved one gaily describing how he murdered your loved one?

Now, as far as your ad. Put yourself in the shoes of a crime victim, especially one who has had a loved one murdered. Would you then think this ad is funny? Would you like to be constantly reminded of your loved ones death? What is it about death that anyone would find humorous?

I invite you to visit www.pomc.com, and in particular, visit our "Murder Wall" where over 2500 names of loved ones are posted in remembrance. Read the biographies posted on the site. Visit the Topic Forum, where over 235 survivors of murder come to support each other and ask THEM what THEY think of your ad.
