What does it mean when a student is able to read all the letters, but reverses them (for example reads DOKV as ODVK)? Is that a referral for a vision fail or a referral to the school's literacy coordinator? Or both?

For the age group I'm with, I use the MassBat. Interesting question though

i think it would need a chat with their teacher to see if it's something that the student does frequently in class too, or are they just rushing through your screening.

I would have a visit with the teacher also. There are also some questionnaires that are designed to be completed from the teacher's perspective. I would have the teacher to complete one, and also the parent to complete a parent questionnaire. I would re-screen, put this info together and then decide whether to refer. I am leaning toward a referral. This child could have a visual processing problem. Here is a link to a wonderful parent/teacher questionnaire. ...agree. If it's something that only occurred during the screening I wouldn't worry about it but if there are reading and or writing reversals in class a dyslexia screening would be in order. 2nd grade is about as soon as dyslexia can be identified versus developmental issues.

I generally isolate the letters if the child has difficulty with sequencing. It could just mean they are rushing, or it could be something more in line with dyslexia. I would mention it to the teacher, and re-screen in a few months.
