I think the book is great and it helped me pass my boards.

Can anyone help about the visa screen? I applied and awaiting. what is the process?

Is there a new bill that affords nurse's rights to have green cards?

The Visa Screen Certificate is for any foreign nurse who wishes to work in the US under a Visa of their own. If you are a Canadian, and hold a Canadian passport, then you are covered under the NAFTA Treaty and can immediately begin work with what is called a TN Visa. You just need a letter from an employer for this when you cross the border.............

If you were born in one of the PIC countries, then you will have to wait until the retorgression is lifted, as a TN Visa is not available to you...unless you are an actual Canadian citizen now, permanent resident in Canada is not covered by this.

Once you have completed and passed the NCLEX exam, it will take approximately three to four months for you to receive the Certificate. This also depends on how long that it takes for your school to sned the proper documents to CGFNS. For some reason, the Canadian schools are quite slow at doing this..............

Hope that this helps............

I am Canadian. I have everything in place. I am just waiting for the TN Visa. Is the TN visa screen , the TN visa? I was told it was but still am unclear. I was hopeing to know more about the process once I receive this certificate in the mail. Then what do I do? Thanks

hello, i have been through this mess just recently :crying2: . the TN VISA is your permission to work in the US... you now need the VISA SCREEN from CGFNS to get your TN VISA. according to my Visa Screen document, its good for 5 yrs. and by the way getting your NCLEX is part of the VISA SCREEN process. in short you need the NCLEX and the VISA SCREEN to get your TN VISA...the CGFNS web site has more info on this VISA SCREEN stuff. good luck.

Thank you for responding. THe whole process has been hard as you know. I do have my NCLEX finally which was very difficult and costly. NOw what happens when you have the visa screen in your hands. I dont have it yet. Do you just give it to Border Immigration? What is the next step? thanks again

The above poster is correct...........The Visa Screen Certificate is issued by CGFNS once you have passed either the CGFNS exam or NCLEX, and the English exams if you required to take them, and have applied for it. The TN Visa, based on the NAFTA Treaty, is issued for Canadian and Mexican RNs to be able to work in the US without waiting for the green card.............Sure, you can apply for the green card, but this will get you started and allow you to work almost immediately.

The TN Visa is only available for RNs, and those that hold Canadian or Mexican passports. It is not available for permanent residents of those countries. :)

Thank you. I am Canadian and am waiting for all things to happen. Its very nice when someone can reassure you. Sometimes you feel like your all by yourself. Its nice to know that others have gone through or are going through the same process. Thanksagain

ok when you get that document, you can go look for jobs in the US. either as a travel position OR as staff. for a travel position, your company will write a contract w/ you. once you have that contract in hand, *double check the details of the contract: pay, hours, time off, night shift/day shift, rotating, contract start and end date etc. you must also apply to the nursing board of the state that you want to work in... follow the instructions in their application packet; you will prolly have to send them a copy of you VISA SCREEN (depends on which state you are applying to) and ofcourse your NCLEX certification (amongst other documents). once they issue you a lisence.. you then take your contract along w/ your VISA SCREEN and your US *state* lisence to the border and tell the agent that you are applying for a TN VISA. he/she will direct you from there. some borders take cash only! i.e. the airport in montreal. my last TN VISA cost me $50 US (?)... i dont remember.

PS:i've always had a passport. in my humble opinion that having it w/ you even when crossing the US/CAN border helps alot. especially post 9/11. the steps/proceedures described above may vary... but you do need a state lisence, NCLEX, and visa screen to get your TN VISA. your company (hospital, if you are going as staff) should help you w/ all these steps. good luck.
