I was thinking if I got paid for all of the jobs that I do as a CNA I would be a really rich woman. Feel free to add to my list these are just a few I can think of right of the top of my head:

-Chef : when your pateints don't like what they are served for dinner guess who has to throw something together for them to eat. Or your patient that has diabetes had a blood sugar of 40 and you have to raid the pantry trying to find something quick that had carbs and sugar.

-Beautician/Manicures and pedicures : Who had to do the old lady's hair and cut the old man's toenails....I do!

-A best friend:heartbeat: When your patients are upset or just need to talk guess who they talk to...ME!!

-Nurses third hand :nurse::up:: I am always running to get this and helping with that and really I don't think the nurse could do it w/o me:p.

-Comforter:icon_hug:: Always trying to comfort families when someone dies are is going to die. And guess who has to make Gladas feel better when her roomate says that she takes to long in the bathroom...ME

-Housekeeper: Always taking out trash or cleaning pee up off of the floor because Bob thinks that he still has good aim. Or Alice who ate to many candies that she won at bingo and decides to throw up all over the bathroom. :barf01:

-Servant: well at least I feel like one most days. I am not working in a Hilton.:p

-Dental Hygenist :D: Don't forget to brush everyone's dentures before bed.

-Messenger :jester:: Mildred says that her head hurts and she wants something for it. Ed just fell out of bed!!!! Betty refused to let me give her a bath.

-BABYSITTER::nono: Have to watch out for little Eileen she wants to sneak out with our visitors. As Alma tries to pick up somthing up off the floor you remind her that she is not supposed to be bending like that. She had forgot, no really she did!

-Teacher::grad: First you have to push up off the bed then get your balance and then grab your walker. This is the button that changes the station. The station you like is 39, push 3 and then 9.

And it is all in a days work!!!!! Add anymore that you can think of.

Don't forget waiter - In my experience you have to cater to the patient's family's needs the same as, if not more than, the patients.

hey that is pretty cute, but true i hate when pt.s think that a hospital is a hotel and its not!

What do you mean by "when pts. think that a hospital is a hotel"?

I think she means the stable pts who act as if you can wait on them hand and foot.

Specializes in LTC, case mgmt, agency.

What a cute and wonderful way to describe the job. Refering to those pts. who think there is no difference between a hospital & hotel here is an example of what happened to me yesterday.

Pt.#1 - R humerus fx, up ad lib ( if she wanted to ), stable, supposedly alert & oriented.

Pt. #2 - Subdural bleed, bedrest, confused big time, upset family, heart problems ( tele ), determined to get up!!!!

They are in rooms next to each other!

Ok, so pt #1 is somewhat demanding, but thankful and nice about it. I had just given her a second back rub when I hear a thud! OMG! So, I run out of room and there is pt #2 on the floor where pt #1 can see him laying on his back. I get a call from the monitor room that he is in v-tach and I run for the crash cart. All staff is there for me as I try to get a set of vitals and assess him. Pt.#1 cannot miss this, her door is open and she obviously can see and hear everything. She puts on her light and when we don't respond she yells out to us, so when can I expect someone to answer my light and get me more ice for my water!

That's just 1 of many stories like that. I wish patients ( not all ) would appreciate all we go through to return them to their pre admit status or all we do to make them more comfortable , etc. I love my job and would not trade it for anything because 9 out 10 patients make it a great experience. I love the fact that I have made a difference or touch someones life in one way or another. And I am always extremely thankful for the wonderful CNAs I work with. God bless them all.:nurse:

Mechanic- I had to fix 2 beds, a tv, and one bedside commode tonight at work

When doing my clinicals, I fixed a toilet. But it wasn't a big problem.

I think CNA jobs are a lot like a SAHM's job. So for all of you who do not SAH, this is a little preview of all that is expected. Of course, moms also have to act as chauffeurs. At least CNAs don't have to do that. Copy%20of%20wink.gif

In my experience, for what it's worth, people don't remain in hospitals very long; certainly not longer than their insurance company will allow them. If they are taking up space in a hospital bed, it has to be for a reason. So I guess if we're there to help, we should just help and be glad that we're not in their shoes. If I had to choose I'd rather be helping them than needing to have someone help me.

You forgot counselor- Seems we have times when we always have to cheer a family member or resident up with words of encouragement and hope.

go to girl/boy ~ seems like everyone from patients to doctors always find me to ask question I have no clue about. I am not management/administration. Not that it bothers me, but they always give me the "What? you don't know" look...i have to look at them and say "hey I'm just the CNA you'll have to ask the nurse" I had a doc today ask me about a med call that he for some reason thought I called in. I said "ah no..i took the call, but the LPN is the one who calls in the meds."
