All downhill from here? An update.....

A sincere Thank You to everyone who took the time to post a response to my earlier post concerning my nonexistent orientation. Unfortunately I have expressed my concerns only to be rebuffed by my preceptor. She put her hand up to my face and said "I only have time to hear you are doing fine today!" So another day of nauseating frustration and fear. My Nurse Manager has taken a leave of absence. I have no idea why, no one feels the need to fill me in. I feel it would be insensitive to go over her head while she is gone. I do see now I am viewed as a warm body, someone to assist the 'real staff' in making the day more bearable for them. I had two vent patients and then was made to take an admit from the ER "for the experience" I did not sit down all day, had no one to go to for questions/help/assistance. Because of the way the RNs treat me on the floor, the aides have no respect for me and hide instead of assisting me with baths/turning, etc. I somehow manage to get all of my work done, but at the end of the day I know that I could be doing a much better job if someone/anyone would show me the right way to do things. And after putting in yet another day from H@#L, they have the nerve to ask me to stay another 4 hours, totally unsupervised, to lighten their load. This is not what I was promised as far as my orientation expectations are concerned. It is very frightening, putting someone like me out there alone dealing with extremely critical patients without supervision or experience. I am at the end of my rope and have no idea what to do.

IF...I were in your shoes...this is what I would do: RESIGN...TURN IN YOUR NOTICE...MAKE IT FINAL!!!

You do NOT have to put up with that abuse. You are not their slave, you are an individual on orientation...you are NOT getting your orientation...you get too much attitude from the staff...so why are you still there????

Life's too short to stay on a job that is soooooo unproductive and unhelpful to you so early in your orientation phase. GET OUT!!!

Maaaannn...I wish I could have been in your shoes when that nurse put her hand up in your face. She would have lost herself a hand, a wrist, and maybe even a whole arm. :rotfl: Protect yourself...take an Assertiveness Training Class...you have to learn when to turn away from the insanity. JUST DO IT! :kiss

So, it looks like you have 2 choices. Stay (and be in a hellish environment) or go. You have to put yourself first, no one else will.

Honey, your manager could be gone for a loooong time. Probably trying to get away from some of the other messes s/he has contributed too through her management "skills". Take care of you! Go to the person covering for her and say what you have to say. This faulty system depends on people who are afraid of speaking up or don't want to disrespect others.

I echo what I said earlier, in your previous thread. Were it me, I would look for another situation. This won't work and you are already stressing. There ARE BETTER JOBS/POSITIONS out there...you saw that from others in the previous posts to your prior thread. Please, move on. All the warning signs are there, SCREAMING at you THIS will NOT work! You are well aware your patients' wellbeing and very license hang in the balance every day you work, under "normal" conditions. I see nothing good coming out of this.

If you are that unwilling to move on, AT LEAST get in contact with who ever is filling in while your manager is away. You need a speedy resolution to this problem before something really untoward happens!

And...if you don't MOVE ONWARD AND OUT OF THERE, you could end up being sued by a family member because you weren't doing something kosher enough for their loved one who happens to be a patient of yours. Do you really want that??? Or...WORSE...you could have a patient expire on your watch that you are legally liable for...do you want that??? What's it going to take for you to hear us old seasoned nurses here at Allnurses who wouldn't mislead you...we're only trying to save you from a very dangerous situation that could cost you not only your license, but your freedom as you know it. Do not just walk away from this job, RUN!!! Surely there must be a safer place for you to work out here where there is still a nursing shortage?! When you write your letter of resignation, you might want to send a copy to the DON or CEO of your hospital, stating the concerns that you shared with your "preceptor" (if you can really call her that). They need to be aware of the potential danger in their facility, if they care at all...

Just my 2cents worth. Celebrate your independence from jobs that cause nauseating frustration & fear!
