Moving to Anchorage in 2 weeks, Need help with housing!!

U.S.A. Alaska

Hi, I was just offered a job today at Providence in Anchorage as an RN! I am incredibly excited but have a lot to figure out in a short amount of time. I have never been to Alaska, and I'm leaving to move up there from Colorado in 2 weeks. I was wondering if anyone had any insight about where to live. I don't mind driving a little to get to work but probably not more then 20min. I'd like to find a 2bed apartment, I have a 100lb dog. I want to live somewhere nice and safe because my husband will be gone most of the year overseas. Any help or insight with housing, apartment complexes, or just some general advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks!! Oh, also, I just graduated in May with my BSN!

What did you end up figuring out? I've been looking into housing in the area as well for a possible travel nursing position in anchorage in January. You're probably in the middle of or ending your assignment. Unless, maybe you decided to extend. But I'd love to hear how things are going for you. And if your housing worked out well I could use the same place and use you as a referral if they offer a bonus or anything. Hope to see your post soon :)

Try Eagle River, Birchwood, Peter's Creek, and Chugiak. They are all a short drive from Anchorage (listed from closest to farthest and usually rent/housing is cheaper the further you are out from Anchorage).

Thanks. It looks like those are all real estate agencies however. I'm looking more into renting or subletting since I'll probably only be up there for 3 months at a time for travel nursing. I would absolutely love to sublet from someone because I keep things clean but I love the personal atmosphere. Thanks for the info thought, I appreciate it.

Congrats on your new job! May I ask how did you get this job? Did you have previous experience? Did you apply to a particular hospital or are you using an agency and which one? I am also a new BSN grad and would love to get a job up there. Thanks!!!:D

Sorry I am just now responding! I've been here 2 months now and I really like it! I ended up getting a place right down the street from Prov that's gated because I wanted to live somewhere I felt safe and secure as I got to know the areas. It's very expensive up here, I lived 15minutes out of Denver for 2 years, and my rent is twice as much in Anchorage as it was there. It seems the thing to do is buy in Anchorage if you can. One other interesting thing is that areas change from good to shady really quick, one street/block is fine and the next is funky, so that's been something to get used to.

I got the job by applying online, I graduated in May 2011 with my BSN and my dream was to work in a NICU, I'm newly married and don't have kids so I was flexible but also not ready to settle and live just anywhere! I'm part of an internship program that's great, we have an education day a week and then 2 shifts with a precptor for 12 weeks so a lot of learning which I like. :)

muircv,

I know this post is a couple years old but I have a couple questions. I have applied for a couple internship positions (NICU being my first choice) and I was wondering how long it took for them to contact you after you applied. Also do you have any tips to make yourself stand out?

[COLOR=#003366]muircv Me no like "shady"! lol...I have been looking for a place for a couple of days online. We own a place in Seward (living in TN for now and was offered a job @ Prov a couple of weeks ago), but I could not make that long of a commute after working a 12 shift. Any suggestions on a place to rent when in the city for 3 shifts? Thanks and Aloha!!

We ended up buying a house after only being up here for 4 months. I would say you'd prob want to rent a room from someone. I could not so the commute even to the valley with working 12hr shifts, but many people do it! Also now that I'm more used to it, less areas are shady than I originally thought, anchorage itself insist not very pretty with the architecture etc.! Just don't live in mountainview or fairview

Thanks again for the input, muircv!! I am now renting a 2 BR condo with a heated garage 5 miles from campus-still in the lower 48 until the 5000 mile drive in June. Question for you when ya get a chance: From what you have experienced and know from others, what do you think about Native compared to Prov? Any info would be awesome!!! You can PM me or post if ya get a chance. Aloha!
