Who had parents call them because you disciplined their precious baby? I have had mumsy call me after I pulled her daughter up on turning up to work on time. I have had a father turn up to an annual discussion...mate it is not school report night!

Helicopter parenting is alive and well in the US also. I think that some college's just make the situation worse by purposefully hindering students from hearing diverse ideas. They may preach tolerance but they do not practice it. This environment added to the already (helicopter) parenting does make the kids unable to cope. There was a situation this week at a college when a 19yo female student attacked another student (walked up and punched them in the face 4X) because she didnt like the views (pro-life) of that student. These kids are not being taught that it is OK to have different opinions and that said opinions should be discussed/debated. The parents and schools are failing them.

I remember when I was in grade school being taught that it was OK to have different opinions and we should hear and consider those. Also if I forgot my lunch my mom would bring one if convenient, if not figure it out (we shared with each other). It is just sad, and hurtful to these kids, that the parents treat them this way!

Your post has nothing to do with the article. Your post is a politically conservative anti-liberal college talking-point. Again, nothing to do with the article.

IMO, it has everything to do with the article because the attitude carries over to college where in some cases it is reinforced, this is a negative double whammy that is hurting these kids and causing poor coping skills (as evidenced by the example I used). They are not learning how to deal with life from either their parents or getting the experience from college that was at one time the norm.

Your opinion misses facts. There are plenty of conservative republican leaning helicopter parents. Being a helicopter parent has absolutely nothing to do with the parent's political viewpoints. Helicoptered children attend a variety of colleges to include conservative leaning ones. Again, this article has nothing to do with politics.

I never said that all helicopter parents are left leaning. The OP was talking about an adult employee's parent being involved (I think), the article presented by the OP talks about parents of college kids being overly involved. I was just saying that I think the current college environment at most colleges is not helping these kids learn how to deal with life. When you have a 19yo walking up and punching someone multiple times simply because they cannot deal with another student having a differing opinion then yes we have big problems. Parents should have taught that it is OK for people to disagree. If some kids didnt get that at home then at least they had another chance at college, the place that used to encourage differing opinions and debates on the day's issues. IMO this is not happening the way it used to and it is the kids who are being hurt the most. You are right, it is not about politics, it is about raising kids who are equipped to deal with life. Hopefully college age kids dont have to many traumas in their young lives but they will eventually come.

O good grief, the article was a lament for nurse managers dealing with parents who don't cut the cord. It was not supposed to develop into a squabble about political leanings.

Why do you think the entire "student loan forgiveness movement" exists Daisy?

They still don't get it. ?

Keeping on reinforcing bad behavior.

That escalated quickly!

Honestly, I think Daisy is being accused unfairly. She made an appropriate comment and her words got misinterpreted.

Thanks, Thanksforthedonuts!

I think Konichiwa is agreeing (but not sure)...

Are you saying you, a manager, disciplined a registered nurse working in your facility and her mother called you to complain?

I hope I would have had the sense to say, "Per hospital policy any issues with employees can only be discussed with the employee."

Ferheaven sakes, how would you even know for sure it was the mother on the phone?????

I hope this is a troll because it is all kinds of crazy.

No not a troll...just an absolute 'lawnmower parent'. Of course I told her where to go. I was half expecting a call from the EDONs PA to say she was trying to call her. Trust me the nurse and I had a subsequent meeting about her mothers boundaries and a strong suggestion about her moving out of home.
