Air Force nursing FY2021

Published

Hello all,

I have looked all over this site in hopes of finding others that are getting their packets ready and are applying to the Air Force this fall. I have not found any recent threads on this.

I am applying for an ER spot. I have been a RN for 7 years and work in a Level II trauma emergency center. I have my MSN-Administrative Leadership and TCRN. Is there anyone out there that is also getting their packets ready for October boards? My recruiter told me that because of COVID everything has been pushed back and that boards will meet in October this year. He also told me that I would be going to MEPS and doing my medical in the next 3 weeks.

I think I’m a week behind all of you as I was picked up in the rolling NP board that met just after the nursing board. So I’m watching what goes down with with you all to guess what’s up next for me. So please post when you know something ?

sounds like today something is going down, my recruiter has a sense of urgency to get my paper work in by today to make OTS by Jan 5th.  A bit anxious. It's hard to relax when one is not in control of the process.

Mine has been urgently getting me to get security checks, signed forms, etc... all turned in the past 2 weeks-even overnighted my finger print cards to me since I was out of town, but he keeps swearing he doesn't know my OTS date and that I will find out before him. Maybe the rest of us will hear something soon!

A different recruiter emailed me Wednesday to get paperwork and security clearance done  called me today apparently my new recruiter I was assigned a month ago is on leave. I put on my application that I couldn't got to OTS till February due to a wedding. This recruiter states all nurses have to go to OTS in January. He says my options are to go in January or reapply next year. So I guess I am going in January.

I don’t have my OTS date either.

Same here. No OTS and no assignment. Only other thing I’ve done is the ridiculously long background check. Weird to hear you’re selected, then nothing.

Weird. My recruiter said I wasn’t going January. He said they are trying to have all October board selects to OTS no later than the March class. I talked to him week of thanksgiving and he thought it would be 2-3 weeks before we hear anything. He also said there are an average of 5-10 days between graduating OTS and having to be at your assignment base. He mentioned that some of the classes this year didn’t even get to go home and had to go straight to base because of covid. Frustrating to know nothing when I need to do things like sell my house...

Interesting! I had a security clearance and finger prints already completed in the system due to my contracting job, maybe that helped get my stuff through for January more quickly? But also, this Monday my recruiters had me sign and Initial my 26 page package of everything and sounded like that would be the last piece before I got orders.. but still waiting.

So the way that's generally done is you are allowed "travel days" between OTS and your first assignment base based on where it is and how you plan to travel. Ex: if your assignment is California and you tell them you plan to drive from Maxwell to California, you are allowed 6-7 travel days; if you tell them you're going to fly, you're allowed 1 travel day; if your first assignment is somewhere like Eglin in Florida, you'll likely get just a day or two because it's so close. They used to tell you you could take "leave en route" and take some extra days but with covid, I'm sure that has changed. But when you get where you're going, they are *supposed* to give you 10 house hunting days that do not count against your leave so you can find a place at your new base.

As for selling the house, get that thing listed! LOL If you are not currently tied to the military, you can Google search and try to figure out the nearest TMO (transportation management office) closest to you and start calling and asking them about getting your stuff moved, unless you plan to move It your self. They won't do much without orders but they can guide you and when you do get your orders, you can start calling and arranging stuff. I pulled it all off while hubby was at OTS last Summer. Ended up selling the house and having the moving company come pack us up and take all our stuff within about 5 weeks!

I think that was the last bit we did before hubby got orders last year.

My parents were just down there, it actually looked pretty nice. Did you put CONUS as preference or OCONUS?

I put choose from either. I’ve heard people complain about the base and area but then again, everyone in the Air Force complains about every base, even bases I’ve liked so I’m sure it’ll be fine
