Air Force nursing FQ FY 2018

Hey everyone. I'm applying for a critical care slot for FY 2018 and was wondering if there is anyone else going through the application process?

I'm going to be applying for the FY19 year :).

I will be submitting in September, can't wait!

So exciting! I'm applying for Critical care. Although I'm still fairly new. I'll have about a year of CC and 7 months of L&D experience. I figured it doesn't hurt to apply. It may take me a few attempts but I'm ok with that. I do have previous military experience as well. How about everyone else?

I'm just getting in contact with recruiters. My husband is finishing up pilot training so the recruiter suggested I wait until I know where we will be based out of and contact a recruiter in that area. I realize it's a lengthy process so I want to get the ball rolling! Any tips y'all can give me?

I have my BSN and 3+ years of outpatient surgery experience and home health. Anyone going flight nursing? Any certain experience required for reserve flight nursing?

Specializes in Adult Critical Care.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I doubt they're going to let you apply for flight without ICU or ER experience.

You need to get at least 1 year of full time RN experience in (preferably) ICU to really be looked at. If you're doing phase 1 PACU recoveries in that outpatient surgery center, then that will allow you to apply as a general clinical nurse (med/surg, PACU, same-day procedure areas). Your home health experience will not count at all.

That's good info, way more than the recruiter gave out. The recruiter just said they're in need of flight nurses. I'm thinking about calling another reserves recruiter to probe for further information, the one I spoke with basically (in a kind way) told me to not waste his time since I'm not sure of our next PCS, but i really want to do as much research as I can on my own.

I dream of becoming a flight nurse but I know I don't have critical care experience. I'm currently a stay at home mom and honestly I just want to serve with the skills I have so I'd take the bedside nursing too :)

I'll throw this out there in case anyone is familiar with... a few years ago I had ONE episode of SVT. According to the docs I had WPW syndrome. I had an ablation done shortly after and was cleared from any/all cardiology care. EKG has been clean ever since, and I stay very active-no svt episodes again. Anyone know if I could still be disqualified for this?

Specializes in EMS, ED, Trauma, CEN, CPEN, TCRN.

Any medical condition can be a disqualifier. You will likely need a waiver for this history. Just make sure you have all of your records.

Hey! I'm applying for FY19 as well, but not until the 21Jan board because I have to have surgery in July and MEPS wants 6 months recovery before I can apply. I'm also prior service, I was an AFSOC loadmaster for 4 years. I'm going to be trying for OB.

That's so awesome!! I hope your surgery goes well. How long have you been in OB?

I went into acute psych when I was fresh out of school with my ADN/RN, then went back for my BSN and PCS'd to Los Angeles because my husband is still Active Duty. So we've been here for about 8 months and I've been working as a postpartum nurse since December of last year, so not long at all, but I love it! Are you applying for the September board?

Yep! I still have so much to get ready and do

I was accepted thru the February 2018 boards and I'm going to COT in August.

If you are going to try for ICU, you have to have at least 1 year of experience in ICU. Just FYI it is difficult because you are going against all other nurses with ICU experience.

The recruiting process is long especially if you have to get referrals for physical conditions. Some people had to travel hours to other cities to see the referral physician and then they still didn't take them. My process took from July-February to get accepted and I'm leaving for COT in August. So it will take a while. Some people do get in faster though.
