I am considering joining the air force as a nurse and I have been told that all slots are full for student loan repayment for this fiscal year (2009). But that the bonus is still available.
I know the new fiscal year starts October of this year. However, my recruiter says that he has heard that there will be no bonus or student loan repayment because of the economy and that they over-did the amt of nurses that they accepted last year. Does any of that sound accurate?
I am also told that I need to give a definitive yes or no on whether I want to join the Air Force before he will even enter my application into the system. He says if I go through the process of getting accepted and then turn it down, then I wasted 4 AFB's time and money.
I am uncomfortable with giving a yes to this before I even get the opportunity to find out about student loan repayment & bonuses for the next fiscal year and before I even find out if I am accepted.
He says if I want to wait to hear about that, it will be December before he knows anything about student loan repayment and then he can enter my app.
Does any of this sound accurate?? Just curious b/c I have no other sources.
Thanks.
If the student loan repayment goes away (and this may have changed, but the last I heard it hadn't), then the bonus becomes $25K and a four year commitment. If you turn down the bonus, you owe three years.
If you're later picked up for the loan repayment, which is what happened to me, the bonus is $25K and the repayment is up to $40K, and you incur a six year initial commitment.
I hope it is still 30,000. When I filled out my application and signed things it was 30,000. The process of confusion continues even after signing my acceptance letter. I was getting ready to commission and my rank was wrong on the "scrolls", not sure what that is. How can it be right in all spots except one....
anderm22,
Congrats on passing MEPs and getting as far as you have with the paperwork.
The wait is something you can not get around. If you read old posts, they are just full of frustration and comisseration on how long the wait is, and if anyone has heard anything. lol. I would not worry about the scary things you hear around about the slots being full. I don't know that anyone who has had a full qualifying packet not getting in. The process kind of screens out anyone who can't cut it before that I think (may be wrong of course). We all just have to sit around and hold your breath.
It took me 5 months from submitted packet to any answer at all. I am going in as a qualified CCU nurse. I had hoped/expected to be at COT Jan,10. I am leaving in May 24. 27 days left!!! But the paperwork is still slow... I still don't have orders. Oh well. It'll happen. So try to relax.
midinphx - Did you sign your acceptance letter yet? I personally went to my recruiter's office and called him everyday last week and he said that I am still selected, but they don't know what my assignment is so I cannot sign the selection papers yet. They said that they would find out by the end of this month. I think the ICU nurses get priority right now. I will be going in (I hope) as a fully qualified clinical nurse (med/surg) even though I do stepdown icu in San Antonio right now. I gave my recruiter a deadline of July - if they don't know by then, I am not signing anything.

I have actually done my commissioning. I leave in May. Remember though, I've worked on getting in since last May. The military moves at its own pace. Paperwork in the military has always been a joke, despite computer breakthroughs, there is no improvement. If this waiting game is really that distressing to you now, be prepared for a career of frustration. I'm leaving in 27 days, and i have no orders. I'm not sweating it, it will happen.

Glad you answered this - now I know it hasn't changed for others. The loan repayment is awesome - even though it's taxed, which sucks.
Well When my recruiter submitted my paper work, they emailed me to make sure all the info that i had submitted was accurate. and then when I got my acceptance letter and was waiting to get approval kfor commission, my recruiter called me to let me know that I had been selected to receive the loan repayment. and then when I met with him, i had to sign paperwork saying that I will accept the loan repayment.

one other thing. What is the sign on bonus? They told me all the student loan repayment is gone but there is a $30,000 bonus still. Is this right? I've seen $30,000 $25,000 and as little as $10,000. Which is it?
