Air Force Loan Repayment

Published

i got some sad news today. my recruiter just called me about a half hour ago saying that there is no more money for the loan repayment, and that i need to sign updated paperwork for an alternate. i don't know what that means. does anybody have any idea? like...could they possibly just give me loan repayment for the next fiscal year 2011?

Well I just got an email from ADHPLRP. However, the information they got is wrong. They listed the wrong lender, so I don't know if they just emailed the wrong person or whatnot. What should I do? I emailed the AFIT personnel that the information is wrong and that my recruiter had me fill out the loan papers again because he couldn't find the one from my original recruiter (the one he replaced). HELP!

AdammRN- I'm going to May COT. My recruiter told me two weeks ago about the loan not being available.

Keep at it - the people at Wright-Pat aren't the sharpest, unfortunately.

Carolinapooh speaks the truth! Keep at the emails and keep ALL correspondence between you and the AFIT contact. They messed up my information several times, but with persistence I got it fixed.

Yea like the others said basically stay on top of them until they have it right. The person I am emailing told me if anything is wrong to just email her with the right stuff. I filled out an application with my recruiter with lender contact information and loan amounts and I'm pretty sure that's what the person at Wright-Pat got.

These are the same people who claimed my loans totaled less than eight grand - I owe nineteen grand - and this particular person got very upset with me when I went over the paperwork again with her and explained why the figure she had was wrong. I was off for three days and when I came back, I opened my email and there was a series of nastygrams in my inbox...and there were answers from my lender....and THEN there was one that was very circumspect from Wright-Pat telling my my loans amounted to nineteen-whatever they are and X is how much the AF was going to pay.

It took a month.

Carolinapooh, it sounds like you and I may have had the same POC at Wright-Patt. I had several frustrating exchanges with her. Good thing I'm a good record keeper like you!

I finally got an email back from the lady at Wright-Patt, and now, she says that they do have my loans from the correct lender. I'm definitely keeping that email but also turning in another lender release along with a coyp of my promissory note to my recruiter...just in case they change their mind. haha

I have a question about this Air Force Active Duty Health Professions Loan Repayment Program. I have gathered from previous posts that the 90 slots have already been filled for this fiscal year. Am I right in thinking that this means the Air Force only repays loans for 90(or whatever amount they decide that year) officers each year?

What happens when you are an officer and need repayment but there are no funds that year? Do you have to apply for payment each year?

The max amount for 2010 is 40,000 grand if I've read correct. Or is it 40,000 in repayment one time only ever? Or can you get repayment more than one year?

I am seriously considering joining the Air Force and loan repayment is a major incentive for me as I have close to $60,000 in nursing school loans and want to know for sure that this will be covered if I do choose to join. I am also confused by active duty obligation. Say for instance, I need 2 years of repayment (if there is such a thing), so that is 2 years of ADO right? But what would be my initial agreement? 3 years? For a total of 5? I got the impression from another site it was 8 but they did not explain how they got to this number. Sorry for all the questions.

Here's how the loan repayment works.

I was told by my recruiter when I accepted an appointment there was no repayment available. I didn't care - I only wanted back in. So I signed the papers for "no loan". This was in May.

About two weeks into COT (in October, almost November) I got an email from AFIT saying the funds were available, and if I accepted them I'd extend my commitment. Groovy! So once I got to my base I accepted the loans and am now waiting for my balance to take a massive dump.

If you don't accept any money outside of your pay, your initial commitment is three years. If you accept ONLY a bonus, your commitment is four years. If you accept ANY amount of loan money, the commitment becomes SIX years, whether you take the whole forty grand or five grand.

Also - the amount is taxed (which in my opinion is ridiculous) by twenty-five percent plus state income tax if you have to pay it. Stupid but true.

There is no guarantee by any branch that you'll get the loan repayment unless you sign a contract saying you will. And even THEN Congress can do what it wants.

All money is paid as a lump sum and not over time, and is a one-time payment.

The Air Force gives loan repayment to as many officers a year as Congress says it can. Every RN in my COT class who asked for the repayment got it; there were 127 people in my class and ninety percent of them were RNs. That was only ONE class.

Thanks so much carolinapooh, that was a big help. I've read alot of your other posts in this forum and you've been very helpful and informative. I'm going to call the recruiter on Monday in my area to get started. I've thought about this for almost a year now since I graduated and really think it's what I want to do. I'm excited and hope I get in but scared also I won't. My dad was in the army and my grandpa was in the navy and I felt like trying something different. From what I've read about the air force I feel like it will be the right fit for me, that there a family feel and they take care of their people, of course not to say the others don't! I respect every branch, I'm actually still thinking about the navy too. :)

Question for you, if I wind up with a 3 year contract, and then wanted to bump up to a 4 year contract (to get the bonus), could I do that after getting to COT or the first base they send me to? Is that possible or would I have to have everything totally worked out before being commissioned?

thanks!

I'm prior enlisted Air Force; my dad was retired Navy, my oldest brother's retired Navy, and my other brother (poor Michael - he's always the "other brother" because he's older than me but younger than Allen!) is retired Army. Had the AF for whatever reason said 'no', my next stop was the Navy recruiter. I'm personally biased to the USAF and the USN myself.
