Air Force FY2016

Published

Hi! This will be my second time applying as a NICU RN for the Air Force. I'm applying to the September boards. It would be great to hear from anyone applying to these boards as well! I posted a different thread a while back about this same thing, but it got no responses. Figured i would try again!

:)

Congrats all!!!

Amanda38RN, I was wondering how hard was it to get the assignment at Walter Reed? Are you going into AF or Army?

I'm going into the AF, and I put Walter Reed as my third choice on my assignment preference sheet. I have no idea if it's hard to get an assignment there, but I'm really excited to be going to such a great facility!

Have anyone found out when your actual commission date is? I have also been selected for navy program and I can get my commission any day. I just want to make sure that Air Force commission is actually happening before declining my navy commission. According to my AF recruiter, background check is holding

my AF commission. I know for sure that I have current active security clearance through navy. Any thoughts?

The only AF nurses at Walter Reed are critical care (ICU).

Question for you. How did you apply for 2 separate commissioning at the same time?? I was under the assumption you could do one branch at a time. If I am wrong, please disregard. I was also informed that the boards had not met for FY16 for the Navy. When did you get your offer???

Does anyone know the current needs of the Air Force Reserve for Operating Room Nurses (I've got 12 years experience as an OR Nurse, CNOR certified)? I'm interested in joining a Military Reserve unit. Turned 40 this year. I've reached out to schedule an appointment with the Healthcare Recruiter, waiting to hear back from them.

If I recall right, pretty high. Also sure they are the ones who kept most of the bonuses etc.

OR and flight nursing are the two highest needs for the Air Force in general as of last year. I'm not sure how many of those slots are active duty vs reserves. I'm not sure how many of those slots are funded either.

Anyone get overseas for their first duty station?

I will be applying to the OB boards either in the September timeframe or the March. Do you have the numbers on the number of people accepted vs. applied? What would you say made your application competitive?

If you consider Alaska overseas...it's a pretty common AF assignment...then yes. Other overseas assignments are pretty uncommon.

I just got a call from my recruiter, I got selected! Very elated right now and I was told that I was the only OR nurse to be selected for January boards (whether or not that's true I don't know). I know there were 18 slots for OR nurses this year and counting me there are 15 remaining. COT date is 15Aug and first station is SAMMC. Good luck to all those applying and congrats to those selects and alternates.
