We are buying a house in chesapeake to get out of Portsmouth. We are doing online public school as well because the schools here are not that good. The ICU here is the biggest bur it is split with ICU and step-down patients from what I understand. I finally get there next week!!!

I am currently finishing my residency program which all nurses go through even if you have prior nursing experience as we are new to navy nursing. I am at Portsmouth and they do rotatable between nightdifferent and days. Depending on where you work will dictate how often you rotate. ICU is q12 weeks. I am still trying to wrap my head around not scanning meds. This is weird for me. Titration of drips is different than what I'm familiar with but nothing too bad that you can't adjust to. The hospital I came from had only nurses in ICU so having corpsman is taking some time to get used to.

Hello all. I am at NMCP and graduated ODS at the end of June. I too was selected as an alternate for critical care in December but bumped up in January. I was told this was because green side bought up a bunch of critical care nurse billers which made the need even greater. I was told end of January, picked orders beginning of April, commissioned April 28 and left for ODS 20 May. Scroll is the lonest part because as a naval officers, you are approved by the secdef and POTUS. Congrats to you all that got picked up even sooner and enjoy the crazy, fun ride.

Talked to my recruiter about bonus and she said I was approved for it and she had the paperwork ready. I am waiting for someone to come back from leave so I can commission. Hoping it will be in the next week or two.

I am not familiar with the VBSN. I did mine online and it took about 21 months. Each class was 5 weeks, except for a few, and I took a week off between each. I have 2 daughters (3&5) and my husband retired with 20 years Navy in 2009. He was also a Corpsman. I got out in 2002 and at this point I plan on doing my 15 more for retirement. MEPS was very similar to before except you don't sit and talk with a recruiter there for orders. I got physical, eye check, hearing check, blood draw and finger printed. I had 2 interviews. One was a phone interview with a retired CDR and the other was via Skype with a LCDR stationed at Camp Pendleton MCB.

Hello Andi. I was in for 5 years and have always wanted to go back in the Navy Nurse Corps. I was a DA and just finished my BSN in Sept of last year. I started my process last March and submitted my package in November. I have been working in an ICU as a ADN RN so I think that helped in my time as RN. Since you are just starting to apply for BSN program you may be eligible for NCP. I was not because I was so close to being finished. That is always something to look into. You get commissioning out of school but I know the program is very competitive and gpa has to be high!!! I contacted a medical recruiter out of Lansing who just happens to be an HM1. She has walked me through the entire process and has gotten all my questions and concerns addresses either through her or by someone who knew. I went to meet her and she gave me checklist of items I could start getting ready for her (i.e. marriage license, licensure, certifications, birth certificate and so on). I had to get my service record sent because apparently the DD-214 changed after I got out and I needed the new one. I went to MEPS in July and had interviews in August. After that I had to get references filled out and special letters from my current boss and last one as well sent in to my recruiter. They send for credentialing based on what you are applying for and experience. I am credentialed for critical care. Board met in December and I find out I was professionally recommended but placed as an alternate. I got a call from HM1 at end of February that more slots had opened up and I was now a selectee. I am now just waiting for a commissioning date and then off to ODS in May!!!! Hope this helps. It seemed like forever as I was finishing school at the same time most of this took place, but if it is something yo ureally want, then it is worth it!!!

Thanks ACS13. I hAve gotten further in the process and I am now awaiting to be commissioned middle of April. I go to ODS May22 and then onto Portsmouth VA. I would be glad to answer questions from my experience. Let me know when you are ready.

No worries. I understand the busy right now. Congrats on Bethesda!!! Have not heard anything about bonus yet. Waiting on COMDOCS so was really surprised when detailer called me last week. Why are you moving yourself?? Just curious.

Heard from the detailer yesterday and looks like ODS May 22 and then on to Portsmouth Naval Medical Center!!!! Have you heard anything yet ShunRNBSN??

I have been selected to the navy Nurse Corps and am feeling lost. I was told end of February that my scroll was submitted Jan. 12 so should here back this month. Got email from my recruiter yesterday that she is waiting on my commissioning documents. Not sure if this means that my scroll was approved and returned or if I am still waiting on scroll. If anyone can shed some light on this for me I would greatly appreciate it. Feeling lost in this process.

No word from detailer yet. Should have scroll back this month, then commissioning and so on. Where do you want to be stationed???

So got a call from my recruiter today. I was an alternate as of the last board in December and now have been upgraded to a selectee. They have opened more slots for critical care nurses and I am currently in scroll as I type this. Should be getting my official letter in he next couple weeks and from there commissioning and ODS!!!!! Maybe I will see you at ODS in May after all USNHM2RN.

I agree with Camo-angel. There are options out there, you just need to talk to a healthcare recruiter. The Navy has NCP (Nurse Candidate Program) for students. If you accepted into this, then you will be given a commission upon graduation/completion of NCLEX. Definitely weigh all your options for all branches and what they have to offer and what will best suit you.

Just wanted to add that not all healthcare recruiters are officers. I was just professionally selected as an alternate for critical care of the Navy this past board and my healthcare recruiter is an HM1. (Enlisted First Class Hospital Corpsman) Just an FYI.
