Is anyone else on here applying for FY 2015 for Air Force? I'm in the process of applying for the selection board in October 2014 and it would be great to hear from someone else also applying for the end of this year! :)
I'm interested in air force reserve or my state's air guard after I finish my psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner program in 11 month. I have a BSN now and by then will have three year's of nursing experience with a year each in medsurg, admin, and psych. If anyone has any input on this I'd love to hear from you.
I think it's worth contacting a healthcare recruiter (Contact Us: Find a Recruiter - airforce.com) and getting a timeline started. I'm not sure if you would be eligible to apply for the Summer 2015 board or if you would have to wait for Summer 2016; you'd have to ask a recruiter. These applications take the 4-6 months minimum.
Hello everyone I'm new to allnurses; I've skimmed through threads during nursing school but never got involved. I was planning on joining the thread after I spoke to my recruiter on the 19th but I haven't heard much from the recruiter. It's most likely because I have yet to see him in person. Long story short I don't have any healthcare recruiters near me so I have to travel 2 hours to see one. Getting back on track I was wondering what I should bring to the initial meeting. I spoke to him briefly and he just said to bring medical papers on previous surgeries (2 ACL's), all my certifications and of course SSN, Birth Certificate, etc. I have not heard anything about the 9 questions. I could not find them online either. What should I bring with me and where can I find those 9 questions? Sorry about the tangent I just like to be ahead of the game. Thank you for your time!
My current situation is: I have an ADN currently working on my BSN which will be completed by the end of Spring 15 and work in the ED. I only have one year experience (all in ED) and a number of certifications.
The 9 questions may have changed since my application, and therefore I don't wan't to risk giving you outdated info. The recruiter won't expect you to do anything that he/she hasn't given you to complete. The 9 questions are essays explaining your career goals, why you want to join the air force, what you bring to the table that others don't, etc. Don't get all jumpy about them yet, because they are only important for the chief nurse and selection board to read much later in the process.
The key is to bring a list of good, thoughtful questions. You may want to know things like: what's my salary?, Is there loan repayment or sign-on bonuses?, how often do ED RNs deploy?, how often do I move?, what are my chances of being selected?, what are the PT requirements?, etc. You want the recruiter in your court, but they don't make selection decisions.
Bring your loan paperwork to see if your loans are eligible for repayment. Start thinking about your family care plan in the event you were deployed. You need medical paperwork explaining any chronic condition, no matter how small (ex. if you take pepcid for GERD/reflux you'll need papers). Records of any ED/hospital visit also need to be there.
Thanks jfratian I have plenty of questions to ask the recruiter. I started the process of gathering medical records, even though there isn't much after the knee surgeries, and speaking with some higher ups in my facility asking if they would write a LOR. I'm a single 23 year old male with no chronic conditions or medications.

Oh okay, my recruiter failed to mention to me that I couldn't interview until my application was complete. He just made it sound like we would just schedule it whenever. Dang, really gotta get my stuff together then! Is it true the 9 questions can only be 2 pages long?
