Is anyone else on here applying for FY 2015 for Air Force? I'm in the process of applying for the selection board in October 2014 and it would be great to hear from someone else also applying for the end of this year! :)

Specializes in Adult Critical Care.

I meant that CNOR would help one's application...not be a necessity for application.

Specializes in OR.

Finally spoke to a recruiter today who suggested I go for NICU. (I have 1 yr of NICU among 7.5 yrs of OB & pedi experience ...???) There were 2 NICU slots with 4 applicants & 18 OR slots that didn't have enough applicants?

Honestly I don't want to go for NICU. I'll have more opportunities available to me (locations) in either OB or OR I think.

Specializes in EMT, ER, Homehealth, OR.
They don't require you to have your CNOR certification to be eligible. I don't have mine and was selected for OR, it is not available to me through my employer and you can not buy it to become certified on your own.

I am not sure what you mean by buying your CNOR on your own. You only have 2 years of experience in the operating room along with so many hours in the last 2 years. I believe the hours is around 1500 which would make it just under 20 hours per week. As far as your employer offering it, you do not need an employer to offer it you can pay for it yourself just like I did.

Since you are going in the military during a drawdown I would recommend that you obtain your CNOR before you leave for COT. I am not sure about the AF and nursing bonuses but in the Army you have to have your certification to receive one. The test is not hard, just requires a little studying along with basic nursing skill. I only used the AORN study guide. Most people that I know who took the test only had to take it once.

I was a non-select as well...:-(

Congratulations!

Congratulations!

I was a non-select as well. Have you ever considered public health service nursing?

Congratulations! Where were your references from?

How many years of critical care service did you have?

Congratulations...I'm so excited for you all!

Hi there! I created a group on facebook for all of the people going to COT March 30th. Please feel free to join the group and share your thoughts, expectations, information, etc. I think this will give us the chance to know each other before COT. The group name is Air Force COT 15-03

Thank you for that information. I contacted AORN, and they told me I wasn't eligible to purchase the certification on my own. I looked up the CNOR and found what you were speaking of, so I'm going to get it done. I only have a month before I have to report to my duty station, so it probably won't happen until after I get there. There is no COT for me, already went through officer training through the Navy. I have some work to do, however, the Colonel I interviewed with said as long as I get it before I'm eligible for Major, I would be fine. Thank-you again.
