Ahpra application refusal

Published

Hi everyone,

I´m a registered nurse from Germany with 4 years experience. Went to the whole registration process with ahpra and waited 7 months. Today I received an email, that they are considering to refuse my application. The reason for that is, that they do not consider my training as equivalent with the Australian one. That is really a joke. Has someone ever been in this situation before? How did you write your appeal letter?

Ha Ha just one medication error too many!

I would think so. If you were educated by a reputable education facility and have NHS registration and have worked with safety in the UK you will be okay. I have worked with many overseas nurses, hospital and community and it really is evident who is of standard in that area, and who is not especially when it comes to assessment and medications.

It has been scary and demoralising at times, to see obvious flaws in a nurses standards by Australian practice and attitudes towards the community they are wanting to care for, but your national board continued to accept whatever education from whatever educational institution, from whatever country, that does not even check nursing standards from their nursing colleges. Same as the past English standards, relying on other countries English standards as the benchmark for nurses in this country, just madness that has had ongoing problems now.

Now that Australia is the only country having immigration for nursing also giving desperate people nursing quals who may not even be nurses and can? has been burnt in the past just like Ca BON and others.

Hope AHPRA stick to these standards and do not bow down to pressure.

good luck in your application, should be fine if your nursing school can show accredit ion at the time of your nursing course.

Hi ceridwyn thanks for a quick reply. Your post has given me some hopes. I went through new standards of AHPRA and do fill I fit in all criteria. However they are specifically demanding bachelor of degree and mine is 3 years diploma. There are more chances that they will ask me to do bridging course, though I have completed UK's Oversease Nurses Programme. Do you think I will be waived from a bridging course based on this grounds? Thanks

That is very true, it is indeed the case from my experience.

Hello everyone,

I am a registered public health nurse in Finland currently working in Australia (working holiday) as a carer. I submitted my application in person to AHPRA today and was informed that there is a possibility that I will need to take a bridging course in order to register. I was certainly surprised to hear this since I have a 4 year degree (Bachelor of Healthcare - Joint Degree in Nursing and Public Health). The person who received the application informed that the requirements have changed recently and that it has become more difficult to register. Does anyone know if a 4 year degree and 5 years experience is sufficient to register? Is there anything I can do to strengthen my application? They informed that it might take two months to get a decision and I just want to be proactive because I would really like to work as a registered nurse here. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Paula

Hi Paula, I am not sure what to do if they refusing application of a member who has trained in Europe for 4 years degree. I think you could ask your University to send a detailed tarnsript outlining the subject taught in detailed. Also one of the criteria mention is you should have covered subjects like drug calculation, pharmacodynamics and pharmacology during your course. So if its not on transcript it is worth mentioning in the letter. Keep us updated. Thank you

Nosileia - any news regarding your appeal?? I'm in the waiting process with ANMAC regarding my PR. I'm still hoping to be able to apply for PR but might have an issue regarding getting enough points. I've signed myself up for another IELTS-exam (this time general training) hoping to get that last 0.5 point and thus gaining 20 points for the visa application. Arrghh, the red tape!!

Lisbeth, as far as I know, ANMAC requests the academic IELTS...

Danapal - I know they require the academic for assessing nursing skills - but for PR - itself - they only acquire general IELTS. So as long as I have the academic IELTS for the assessment process I should be able to use the general IELTS for visa purposes. It's confusing I know but I followed a thread elsewhere with mainly UK-nurses. This was their solution.

Danapal - any news for you?? Have you sent in your appeal to APHRA?

No news until now. The next board meeting is scheduled for upcoming Friday. Know more after that...

Hi to you all,

I am very disappointed about this whole situation, plus Australia is a very expensive place to live and raise children. My husband and i decided to go back to Europe. I wish to you all the best of luck, my experience with AHPRA was the most stressful and negative and really its not worth it! Cheers to you all!

Nosileia - so sorry to hear this. I take it they refused your appeal as well? Will you be going back to Greece and when? I feel for you. It's not easy to move - especially across continents. I wish you all the best. Hug from Copenhagen xx
