Age when you had your first child?

Published

Morning everyone! I'm doing a paper for development psych (ugh) and was wondering how old most of you were when you had your first child and what you think the best age to start a family is. I appreciate your responses in advance!

Now I am 40 and I think I am done..although God may have another little surprise out there somewhere LOL..

Best age....tough question. Physically or mentally? Physically I would say younger for sure, pregnancy was harder on my body later, although I seemed to get more fertile with age! Mentally I had more patience, but maybe that is because I had "been there done that" with kids...so it was easier to handle things. I guess over all I would say that late 20s to early 30s seems ideal to me, I think you know more of who YOU are as a person and maybe that would help you more as a parent???

No I'm from California, my mother is from Mississippi.

I got pregnant at 18 and delivered my son at 19. We got married after he was born and had my daughter when I was 22. We are not going to have any more children. My husband had a vasectomy to insure this.

For me it worked out perfect. Everyone tells my husband and I what wonderful parents we are, and our lives pretty much revolve around the kids for now.

I am a stay at home mom/part time student. I would not say we were financially set before we had kids, but our kids do not go without anything.

I worked when my son was little, and my husband was a stay at home dad while he got his college done. Now he works so I can complete school.

I do not think that age matters. I have seen terrific parents that were both young and old, and I have seen people that should have never had children at any age.

Age is just a number, maturity is the real deciding factor.

I can say that one perk is when my kids are grown I will still have a long life ahead of me, and there is a good chance I will see my great-grandchildren one day.

LOL...knew you had southern blood in ya! I am from Mississippi too..Biloxi, and went to Ole Miss. Ended up here in Alabama though!

I was 19. It was the summer before I returned to college to begin my junior year. This was so difficult for me having to leave my baby who was only about two months old. But I am so thankful that my mom kept my baby for me while I finished college. When I wasn't playing basketball, I would go home every single weekend of course. And when I was playing basketball, my mom would bring my son to my games. He even stayed on campus with me a few times. I had my second child at the age of 28.
