A friend of mine wrote me about the seizures he has been having. I know some people get an Aura, but is there some commonality to the after effects?

What he wrote is:

Last time in the hosp I was there for one of my grand mal seizure clustters. Takes me days to start to come out of these things and months for memory to start to get stratightened out. was in hosp 10 days. anyway. coming out of it in hosp, you start to grasp at any explanations as to what is going on around you. I had no idea what was going on. I was toyinh with the idea we were all aboard a cruise ship. the nurses I had fixated on as my wife. a floater duty. "Carlita, hon, we really have to get off at next port. we have to pay the house note"

I haven't ever seen this length of confusion after an episode. Has any one else?

Not unless he was in Status Epilepticus.

My brother has had epilepsy since birth (he had brain trauma during birth) and had seizures often when he was little. Once after a seizure he called my mom a monster and threw a dining room chair at her (he was only 3). Another time he tried to throw himself out of his bedroom window... while it was closed.

Sounds awful for your friend.

I've had one patient in a similar state post-ichtal for a few days. But probably like Gwenith said he was status. Most of the time though the confusion and lethergy doesn't lasts minutes to hours.

Seizures are strange.

Had my second seizure last Thursday and I guess I became a bit combative afterwards. I don't remember a thing except waking up in the ER thinking I was in labor and being mad. I had been taking care of a lady in labor so that makes some sense. The couple were very nice and sent me flowers the next day. I've been off work since then but it was scheduled time off. Had another EEG yesterday. Started on Tegretal.

I wish I had an aura . . . it would be nice to have a warning.

Seizures are strange and I don't like them.

My son is 16 and has had seizures since birth first grand mal at 5 ms. He has been status several times ,life flighted, intubated the whole gamet. After these severe episodes he can go days and not be able to feed himself toilet himself or talk. Eventually he does come out of it though. At home he clusters and when he does it can take hours and hours for him to return to normal if not a day or two. I cant tell you how many times he has learned to tie his shoes and then clustered and lost it all. He now has velcro shoes. We have a red star on the 30 sec button on our microwave because he keeps forgetting which button to push. Seizures are a wild and crazy thing and I dont think very well understood. And believe me my son has had some of the best neuro's in the country from KS to Cleveland Clinic and Anarbor MI. Unfortunately there is just so little understood. That is my in put. Hope it helps in some way.

Grand mal seizures like all forms affect different ppl different ways, and we all have different triggers.

As a person with epilepsy myself, after my last seizure I went searching for sites to talk to ppl who might understand what I am going through.

A couple of good ones are on Yahoo. These ppl are not medical experts but they do have an insight in to what ppl in our situation are feeling because they have been there so they can empathise.

Also by talking to these ppl it helps you realise that not only are you not alone, but sometimes you can help them.

And there are more...

I really hope this can help
