Advice for 2014 UVA hopeful!!

U.S.A. Virginia

Published

Hi everyone!

I was hoping I could get a little advice about UVA's CNL program. This looks like an excellent program and I will be applying for a May 2014 start date (deadline is Oct 1). I'm basically putting all my eggs in one basket with this one, but I have fallen in love with the school and the program! ;)

Here are my current stats:

- Graduating Magna Cum Laude from Liberty University (May 2013) with a BS in Healthcare Management. (3.7 GPA)

- I have volunteered at the local hospital both at the information desk and as a patient representative in the emergency department. The info desk was 1 day per week, and the ED was 1 day every other week--would have liked every week for that one, but demand was high for this position. My volunteer experience is not as extensive as I'd like, especially since I've had to take time off for my CNA class, but I plan on resuming it upon completion.

- I'm currently in the last week of a CNA program, where it seems very likely I will be nominated class valedictorian (I was surprised they even practiced that, but it is what it is I guess :)).

- I satisfy all pre-req requirements except for A&P 1&2, which I intend to complete over the summer.

- Once I pass state boards for my CNA licensure, I plan on getting a limbo job mostly for clinical experience while I work my regular job (mostly to save money for school since I have a husband and a young son as well).

I guess what I'd like to know is what anyone's experience has been like with UVA, what their stats were like, and what the interview is like (from what I understand, its just a short phone interview, but I'd like to know what typically gets asked, etc).

I'd appreciate any insight anyone has on the subject!!

Hello soulshine101, I see you are quite active on these blogs and I also read through the blog for the Class of 2015 Cohort and saw that you were active in that one as well. You seem to know a lot about the program, and you also seem to be enjoying it very much, which is good news for the rest of us to hear! If you don't mind, I would like to talk to someone who is currently in the program and also to discuss their application process. How long did it take for you to get an interview? I am still waiting to hear from the university about interviews (what if I don't even get an interview?!), even though I submitted my application at the Oct 1 deadline so they might not be reviewing my application right away. Also, what kind of experience did you have before being accepted into the program? I don't have a stellar undergrad GPA but I have other factors that I think have enhanced my application well. As you can see, I am a nervous wreck about it! :( Any type of insight into your application experience would be greatly apprecaited :) Thank you so much!

We are conducting approximately 10 interviews per week, and expect to be interviewing through the week of December 16-20. Emails will go out each Friday to schedule the next week's interviewees. We anticipate to continue to send out notices to schedule interviews until December 15th or so.

We hope to post all admissions decisions on Saturday, December 21.

Hi,

So I sent you a private message about a week ago. Check your inbox. It just talks about the interview process and how to handle the waiting. I did not get my interview until I think mid-November. I had a pretty good GPA undergrad but I am also not the traditional student. I went back to school when I was 30 and I just graduated from UVA this past May! Keep in mind and if I am wrong the Dean will speak up but they take a holistic approach so its more than just your GPA. I am sure you have plenty of redeeming qualities:) Yes, I am active on the boards just because I know how difficult the waiting process is and I can remember wanting to know every little detail. I read the UVA SON page probably a 100 times and the content stayed the same, LOL. Overkill on my part. I didn't have any healthcare experience aside from volunteer work. I volunteered in the ED for about a year but thats not as much hands on so I switched to the PICU and got to spend a lot more time with the patients. I spent two years volunteering at the local homeless shelter and I did a lot of healthcare stuff with the guest. I was constantly doing wound changes for one guest. (I know how to correctly do this procedure now) I wrote my capstone for UVA on Telepsychiatry, so basically I did whatever I could to enhance my application since I didn't have a lot of the healthcare part. (I loved learning about Telepsychiatry by the way, I don't want it to seem like I did that capstone just to get into UVA SON, I have a personal interest in it) I think you will be great!! Keep your head up! That interviews coming:)

Thank you so much soulshine! I actually just realized when I read this that you sent me a personal message. When I read it, I actually typed a lengthy response but when I tried to submit it, it wouldn't let me because I haven't been active enough on the site. :( Ahhh. Anyways, all of your information is so interesting! Thanks for the feedback, I will probably have more questions coming over the next couple of weeks.

Thanks again :)

Hi,

I have also applied for the May 2014 UVA CNL program. I hail from the state of Florida. I will have to relocate to VA but after reading about the program I know it will be worth it. I am nervous and excited at the same time!!! Good Luck everyone!!!!

I'm thinking early November at this point. I am heading to the Philadelphia Walk to Defeat ALS on November 2nd, so hopefully the following weekend. I have a friend from high school who lives in Charlottesville, so I'm going to coordinate staying with her if that works. I'm really looking forward to it - I haven't been to the campus in almost a decade, though it remains gorgeous in my memory!

When are you coming? There is tons to do here, wineries, breweries, apple orchards, downtown mall, etc.

I have been checking my application status compulsively, and my current status says "under committee review." Does this mean that they are currently actively looking into my application, or do all applications say that once they start the review process?

Mine doesn't say anything about committee review yet. It says that my Application Status is Submitted, my Dossier is Complete, but it doesn't have anything about committee. I sent mine in on October 3rd (the extended deadline), so hopefully there's just a lag. I won't be secure until I see that change over to committee review...

That's all mine says and I submitted mine on 9/23.

Are only phone interviews being done or do some people get in-person interviews? I have read over so much information I don't remember if they used to do both in the past and switched to just phone interviews. Thank you!!

}

We only conduct phone interviews for the CNL program. We have applicants from all across the country, and did not wanted to disadvantage those who were unable (or could not afford) to come to Charlottesville.

We have always sought to standardize the process as much as possible.

Thank you for letting me know!!

I was just offered a Patient Care Tech position at my local hospital, and I would like that to be taken into consideration with my application. What would you recommend to be the best way to let the admissions committee know?
