Oooof. That. Right there. Don't they know that if they make us get all this education, we're going to notice things like this? That even high school English classes teach Orwell? Don't spit on me and tell me it's raining! I really do my best to stay positive, to remind myself of the reasons why nursing is important to me, and to keep working hard to make a good life for my loved ones. Even so, it's things like this story (and the story about the "short-staffed" hospital that "had" to hire Filipino nurses at reduced cost) that make it hard to keep my head down and in my own business. Maybe some of the upside of being a part of this so-called "me me me" generation is a willingness to eventually stand up and say "This isn't right!" and doggedly pursue ways to make it so.

I think you're going to be ok. I'm a similar type of student, it sounds like, and my preceptors keep assuring me that the basic fundamental skills will come in time and be second nature. They tell me that keeping an eye on the bigger health picture for a patient is more important, even at this juncture. Hard to believe it sometimes when I feel like I do a bonehead thing at least once a shift. I'm not endangering patients, but I sure make myself look silly from time to time. E.g. Most recently, I was looking for some SC pouch to inject heparin on a patient's belly and said "hmm no one mentioned anything about this scar - where did you get it?" Before anyone could respond I realized.... Oooooooh, that's his belly button! Everyone had a good laugh about that. Anyway, I'm trying to just keep working hard, keep studying, and staying eyes open for opportunities to learn.

I read a very compelling compilation of nursing narratives recently that I'd like to recommend to anyone who might be interested. "I wasn't strong like this when I started out" edited by Lee Sutkind. Lots of different nursing perspectives and great for a quick read before bed or commuting.

I got that email too. I'm officially, fully anxious. 17 days to find out if my life is going to change. How to cope with either possibility? I guess it's nice to know I'm not alone even if my friends and family don't fully understand.

I searched the archives to see what had already been discussed about this, and I found mostly older and closed topics. In that vain, I'm hoping some of you could share what has defined a "good" clinical experience versus a "less than good" clinical experience for you. Almost certainly the quality of the instructor plays a huge role, but I'd also love to hear any other contributing factors. Thanks!

Hi all! Applied regular decision summer-entry ABSN only. I'm waiting on this and a few other schools as well. Good luck to those of you waiting on early decision - it sounds like it's coming up really soon! Does anyone know roughly when we can expect to hear back about regular decisions?

To everyone waiting on interviews and waiting on decisions, how are you handling the stress? I'm planning on baking some treats for my recommenders. Anyone have any good recipes they can share? I'm thinking brownies with something extra (nuts/caramel/coconut....) Hey all, I just finished my phone interview, and I'm still vibrating from the experience. I was nervous and excited, and I hope that I conveyed everything about my desire to pursue this degree in this community. My interviewer was very gracious and informative, and I wasn't asked any "gotcha" questions. Like awildsoul said, it was all in the service of communicating why UVA and why nursing. I really enjoyed hearing about my interviewer's role in the school of nursing and her insights into the overall UVA community. I hope that my interview was compelling, but since there's nothing else I can do, I guess I have to relax and hope for the best this December. I am planning on visiting Charlottesville next weekend, so that's something to look forward to! Best of luck to everyone who's anticipating their interview.
