Advice for pre-nursing school studying/reading

Published

I plan to start school at the begining of next year. I was just wondering if there are any good books, articles, etc. that I can read/study now to give me a head start. Thanks in advance.

This site is a good start!:) But it depends, what classes are you going to take?

Personally, I say enjoy the free time now because once school starts, you'll be crazy busy! If there are things you would like to get done before school starts (clean out closets, read a book for pleasure, etc) do it now! I don't have time for any of that right now. I'm looking forward to my 3 week summer break in August: I'm going to the beach with a few books...and NONE of them will be textbooks!

Buy your nursing fundamentals book and go ahead and read it now I wish i had. I passed but with a low B if I'd grabbed that book and read it ahead of time I think I could have gotten my A.

I agree with buttons and christi! Enjoy, relax and spend as much time with family and friends as possible. If you feel that you simply must study and prepare in some way, read something that has to do with time management and coping with stress:banghead:. If you don't already have a "happy place " stress reliever- find what works for you. I'd venture to say that almost every nurse would tell you the same thing, RELAX. Get your mind ready (if there ever really was a way to prepare for this adventure.) The type of learning you will do is unlike anything you have done before. Trust us. The fact that you are wanting to study is a great sign. I'm sure you will do great!!!!! BEST OF LUCK :yeah:

God Bless

I think reading about many experiences during nursing school is good. HOWEVER, you must know that your experience will be one in your own. I have had trouble with schools that some didnt and vice versa. I am in an accelerate program set to graduate in December and if theres one piece of advice I could give, it would be to get a heads up on your professors and know that NO ONE will have the same experience.

Any study tips?

Not sure what school you are going to- or what type of program..... but in my program we had 3 med calculation tests in the first 3 weeks- those that didnt pass were dropeed from the program....so if math is not your strong suit, you might want to get a med calculation book. My other suggestion would be to get a med deck card and start looking at chronic illness medications as most schools do long term care or very basic med surg as a first rotation. Also, the suggestion to look at your fundamentals book is a great one. Anything you do to get ahead of the program, will help and decrease your anxiety. But remember that nursing school is all-consuming, so if you have kids or want to visit your parents or spend time with a loved one- DO IT NOW! Your time will not be your own after school starts. Nursing is a wonderful profession- best of luck in your program :)

Maybe your pathophysiology? Heres the thing, each teacher is different and i am not sure if you would benefit from reading articles. My teachers always gave my a study guide or practice quizes so i knew what types of questions you should look for. So, i wouldnt waste your time too much and as a student finishing my accelerated BSN program in december, enjoy the quiet time!

RELAX while you can!!! Trust me. If you really want to get ahead, study your Patho book... It is by far the most solid foundation in my nursing career. If you understand the disease process and why things are happening, you will be able to predict future problems and critically think.
