Hey guys :)
Alright - I am currently a freshman at Del Tech community college. Next year, I am transferring to Salisbury University in Maryland. Salisbury accepts student into the nursing program their junior year (thats when clinicals begin). Anyway, I'm transferring there as a sophomote next year and applying to the program - I know that it would make most sense for me to transfer there my junior year, that way I would only go there if I definitely got accepted to the nursing program - but my family is going through a really hard time right now, and honestly I don't think I will have a home here in Delaware next year, so my Dad and I decided me transfering to Salisbury this August is the best choice for me - just wanted to give you guys background information on why I'm transfering and all that :)
Anyways - here it goes. I am doing well in school, but I'm constantly worrying about not making it in their nursing program. So I wanted to but my GPA up here and ask for your opinions.
SUMMER 2010 -
1. General Psychology - 3 credits - B
(* I got a B in this course and KNOW I could get an A. I missed the A by one point. do you think I should re-take it to boost my GPA?)
FALL 2010 -
2. English Composistion - 3 credits - A
3. A&P 1 - 5 credits - B
4. Essentials of College Math - 4 credits - C
( * I know a C is not good at all! So I decided to re-take this course in the spring to go for a higher grade)
SPRING 2011 -
5. A&P2 - 5 credits - B
6. Nutrition - 3 credits - A
7. U.S. History Post Civil War -3 credits - A
8. Human Developmental Psychology -3 credits - A
9. Essentials of College Math - 4 credits - RE-Take ... still a C
( * I'm so angry with this class! I am retaking it this semester to get a higher grade and I really just don't think it is going to happen. It is so frustrating and I feel like I wasted my time re-taking for most likely, the same grade)
- I know spring semester isn't over yet - but I know for sure I will get the above grades in all my classes. Math is the only one I am questioning: I know I will atleast get a C, possibly a B, but most likely not
SUMMER 2011 -
10. Statistics - 3 credits - A
11. Sociology - 3 credits - A
- This semester obviously hasn't started yet, haha; but I am expecting an A in both of those courses. I am taking statistics at Rio Salado (online) and it is apparently very easy and all open book exams, so I should be fine for that course.
- Sociology is apparently an easy course, I will study hard and I am confident I can get the A.
So here are my questions!
Where do you guys think I stand right now? Do you think I have a good shot getting in? That C in Math worries me so much ;(
Do you think I should re-take psychology for an A? or do you think it would look bad to re-take it? I just know that I can get the A in that course. General Psych is a simple course, and I know I can re-take it for an A.
Next year at Salisbury I have to take the following courses: Chem 1, Micro, Chem 2, Patho.
Chem 1 and Micro are in the Fall (I apply for the program right before finishing the Fall semester)
Chem 2 and Patho are in the Spring (because they are in the Spring, and I find out if I am accepted to the program before I start these courses - I am not even sure if the nursing dept will look at these courses or how that works)
- - - - - I am sorry for typing a novel! I just really want an opinion! None of my friends seem to understand how important GPA's are for nursing. They are all business, criminal justice, etc majors and GPA isnt as important for them. So I thought I'd try asking on here.
Thanks for your help guys, I really appreciate and feedback/advice you can give :)
Goodluck everyone! :redbeathe
one more question (as if my last post wasn't long enough! haha)
what do you guys think about applying to nursing school with recomendation letters?
I volunteer at hospitals during the summer - do you think it would be better for me to get recomendation letters from my supervisors, or from my professors?
thanks everyone :)
have a good weekend!

One C probably won't hurt you but it all depends on the criteria for admission. Some schools don't take your overall GPA into consideration (they don't care about how you did in the History of the Civil War or General Math).
Most school WILL require either Stats or College Algebra so maybe you want to get a tutor to get you through those.
I had a relatively low overall GPA but my pre-req GPA was a 3.77 and luckily that is what my school used.
Also, how much weigh is put on the entrance exam?
Letters of recommendation....DO NOT send them with your application unless they are requested. The admissions committee has enough to go over and it will just probably annoy them. My school specifically said DO NOT send any info other than what they ask for. If letters will help you out, they will tell you!
Does your school have an interivew or is it purely objective?
These are the questions you need to answer before anyone can really tell you how you stand or where you rank. Call the school, or look on-line and find out the specifics on admission criteria.
Good luck and don't give up if this is really what you want to do!

Are you entering Salisbury to increase your chances of getting into the nursing program? It's a risky move that can pay off, but with your course work at the University level-Patho, Chem, Micro you may not pull off the grades you need to get into the program. If you can get all A's in those classes I think you'll be set for getting into ns.

Thanks for responding back :)
- we do get an interview when we apply to the program
- average GPA accepted is a 3.5
- I talked to the head of the department, she said that they look at your overall GPA (all courses icluded) and sometimes they look at your specific science course GPA
- I'm not completely sure about if they want recomendation letters or not. I do know they give you an option to send in a essay? Which is why I thought I should send in a letter or two as well. If the essay is optional I should send it in, correct?
- I am not exactly sure how much the entrance exam counts towards admission. When I asked that, the nursing department told me it is taken into consideration?
* I know I can get an A in stats this summer, but I really have no idea about this other math course. I know stats is the most important math for nursing, but having a C really worries me. Even if I re-took it, I feel like taking it a third time would look horrible!
* I should definitely retake psych, correct?
Thanks for your help :)
I asked the head if the nursing dept - she said that when I apply, I will
not yet have completed patho or chemistry 2. Chem 1 and micro are the easier classes out of that list - so I really hope I can pull of the grades.
It makes me so
nervous!
I wouldn't even consider applying to a school that couldn't give me their admission criteria....
They take your overall GPA but SOMETIMES consider the science GPA?
They give you the OPTION of an essay (YES, submit one)
THey take the entrace exam INTO CONSIDERATION but can't tell you the weight?
This all sounds shady to me and a bit too subjective. It sounds like maybe they base the entire decision on the interview and then decide if they want to give anything else any weight?
I would certainly persist in gathering information. Call back until you get someone who can give you more concrete answers.

You actually are very right.
She said the major thing they look at is GPA, that's their biggest concern. Then she said they also look at your admissions exam (which can only be took once) and that is another thing they look at.
She also said that we can supplement our application with an essay.
I actually just emailed her last night and asked which GPA they looked at - she told
me they always look at cumulative, and sometimes they just look at sciences.
The only other piece of information I have is the average GPA for last years accepted students was a 3.5 and you are not looked at if you have below a 3.0
hmm?

I've aced Algebra, Trig, physics, and Calculus. And stats was the worst math class EVER! Egads!
Just saying, stats isn't as easy as many people think. I think its painful, sadistic, miserable, etc, etc. And I love, LOVE math.
Food for thought.

I'm jealous! I hate math - If only I had your math skills! Lol :)
I've heard that stats can be horrible. I'm taking it at rio salado, the course is called intro to stats and it is actually a psychology related course. I heard that something like 54% of people who take the class ace it!
The tests are all open book, apparently it really isn't bad at all at Rio. Although I've heard some stats
classes are hell!
Wish me luck!
Yes, my stats was the PSY class as well. I'd rather drive needles through my eyes!
Good luck!
Oh my gosh! Well thanks for the heads up :)
