Advice for new nursing students?

Published

Hello there-

I just got my acceptance letter for a 16 month Second Degree BSN! And I would love some advice from everyone about what its like to be a new nursing student.

Any tips you can send my way? What kind of bag did you use? Traditional back pack or rolling one? supplies? little tricks that you swear by?

I'm open to anything you may say!

Thanks!

Jen

Sleep now. I have a regular backpack. Get a good binder to organize everything. I like to have a separate one for clincals. Wish I could help you with more, but I gotta study for my third quiz this week. Also gotta prepare a case study AND a power point presentation for Monday....

Be prepared to eat, sleep, and breath schoolwork. Get your family and friends on board to support you. I use a regular backpack w good padded straps. The rolling ones are too hard to carry up and down the stairs. I try to buy folders, notebooks, and binders that match somehow for each class so I can't mix them up and accidently bring the wrong item to class. If you can't manage to do all the reading before class at LEAST skim over it. The instructors can tell when you haven't done your reading and your in class learning will be affected. Make friends in class, study together, get phone numbers. Find someone you know you can call at 11 pm to ask a question about the homework assignment due the next morning that you haven't finished yet. Good luck!

Congrats on being accepted!

My advice is make sure you take care of yourself. Sounds simple right? But once the frenetic pace of nursing school starts, its easy to forget to take care of you. Eat right, exercise, get enough sleep (Ha, I know some nursing students are reading that and saying yeah right! Too much work to get done to sleep, LOL!)

And do something fun every once in a while. Your social life will probably change drastically, but every now and then, take some time to do something fun.

I have a regular book bag. I don't carry my textbooks to school. Get Saunders NCLEX Review 5th Edition. Best 45 bucks you will ever spend in nursing school. Trust me on this!! -
