Advice on comfortable shoes

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hi everyone,

I need advice on what are the most comfortable and long lasting shoes for general floor nurses? I live in Columbia, South Carolina.

Thanks very much

I'm a Brooks girl. I have plantar fasciitis in both feet. With taping and my shoes I can make it through most of my shift with minor pain. Be care of Danskos, etc. have seen a lot of nurses twist ankles. One got hers caught on the stairs and ended up with an open fracture and emergency surgery.

After having tried many brands and types of shoes, I have found Alegria to be the most comfortable. They have a lot of cushioning and the shoe conforms to your foot after wearing them for a while. I've got plantar fasciitis, osteoarthritis in feet as well as tendinitis and with Alegria shoes, I can make it on a busy surgical floor for 12 hour shifts with little to no discomfort.

Crocs. Lightweight and oh so comfy

Loved my crocs as a unit secretary & nursing student but... After my 1st year of nursing in Crocs Professionals I could hardly put my foot down without pain. They were not great for me with plantar fasciitis.

I found that Danskos or Alegrias are best for me. I can work 3-4 12 h shifts & still walk at the end. Also, they have a back in some styles, & no holes in most styles (as people... leak sometimes).

For either brand I buy a half a size larger & would recommend getting fitted if possible at least to get the right size the first time since both use European sizes. The Walking Company (shoe store) may help. As both shoes are expensive, some stores may give discounts to local hospital workers. Sometimes there are sales for $99 but no, cheaping out on work shoes for nurses is not the way to go. They need a little breaking in period but once accomplished, they're as comfy as slippers to me.

Birkenstock or Dansko anything else isnt great longterm.
