Adult nurses wanting to work in the USA..

Hello all

I have been reading many of the posts on here about adult nurses who want to go work in the usa, but who are having difficulty because they lack hours in certain areas of nursing.

There is a place called Langara College in vancouver canada, it has an excellant course specifically for those nurses who need to make up the hours, this may be a bit long winded way around but it can get you what you need... it lets you take mini courses in paeds , obstetrics and mental health, each course has theory and clinical components, you can take the theory part of each course at home via distance learning and then once you have done all your theory you will sit an exam in your home country, upon passing they will let you proceed to go ahead with the clinical part of the course in which you will have to go spend approx 3 weeks in the designated clinical areas, to achieve the clinical hours you need, the clinical aspect is done in vancouver! after this course you will have the required hours you need to be able to register as a nurse in vancouver.... this is the way i am planning on doing it, as I have family in vancouver so i do not mind working there for a short while, the advantage is then i will have the required hours for applying to do the NCLEX .... Anyway I just thought I would share this info with those who wishto know where to make up hours from...because I can tell you now its going to be very hard trying to find a place in the UK! .. if anyone wants more information, please contact me via a pm, or here.

Hope this helps!

Tina K.

Ah I seee....well is there no way you could go to langara and stay there on campus while doing the theory part?? that way it would not be long distance?? where else have you asked to do your psychiatric theory and clinical??

Tina K

ps: sorry for the delay, have been a bit busy with assignments

Hi i am in a similar position as you, i am currently doing my nurse training 2nd yr at uce birmingham and for about a year now i have been thinking of working in usa when i qualify. Do u need to gain experience in mental health, child and midwifery to nurse in the us?

How annoying i am still determined to nurse in the us but i just adds another hurdle i guess!

Hi!

Tina K , no unfortunately I cannot go there just like that, I live in New York City. I considered Beth Israel Nursing School in New York and Three Rivers Community College in Stamford, Connecticut. I can only start there in January which will be probably too late for me because I will be seven months pregnant by then:) I guess I have to wait:) Thanks anyway:)

MattyUK: I didn't have enough hours in psychiatric nursing , theory and clinical in my nursing course in Austria, therefore I have to do this one subject course in psychiatric nursing again, including the clinical. I know that the second year is the hardest in nursing school becuase you are right in the middle in the program but hang in there, I am sure you will make a great nurse and if you want to go to America as a nurse you can do it, you just need a little patience:) Good luck to you!

Tina

Found out when talking to ogp yesterday that they do courses at the city hospital in london for those that need the extra clinical experience in obstectrics, psychiatric and children. Hope is not all lost that 1 day i will be nursing in america i just have to finish my training now 2 years to go! :)

That is very good news! Good luck to you:)

just make sure it is an accredited course and accepted by cgfns/BON cos if not will be a waste of time doing them.

Hi all i have a questions that hopefully some will be able to answer:

  • What should i expect get paid using ogp with minimal experience in nursing 1-2 years? :)

Hi matt

Wow does city hospital reallly let you do that?? are you sure ogp was telling the truth? LOL as they once told me that wolverhampton uni did courses like that and when i rang the uni they told me they didn't!! Have you actually phoned city hospital to ask yourself?? I would do this if i were you before believing ogp! if it is true, then i won't have to go all the way to vancouver to do the courses!

Tina k

No i have not contacted them myself but i spoke to ogp again today and they told me that you can only do the course through them. I am recieving some information from ogp through the post this morning sometime around 11am that will hopefully have more information so ill keep u posted ok. ...4 more hours to go till the end off my night shift!...

I think you will roughly be looking at $23 hour. A lot depends on where you are going as if I remember right was told by them that they pay a bit more if living in a more expensive state ie california

So OGP actually do a course now that you can do?? hmm is it fairly a new thing then as when i asked them in 2004 they said they didn't do anything and that I would just have to find universities myself who would do something like that :( How do I go about getting this information from OGP? do I just ring them up again and ask about this? Let me know what that info pack they are going to send you says! I am dying to know , as like you, my goal is to go to the usa also, and has been since i was 12! so am determined not to let anything stop me! :)

TinaK

Ps: I am at coventry uni, and they wouldnt let me make up the hours there, so it also depends on what uni you are at... also is this the solihull branch of ogp that you rang up??

Hiya tina, yes i just phoned ogp for information about how to get my extra hours and they informed me then, from what i gathered over the phone the hospital in london called city do the theory which costs £160 per branch but you have to find a place that will take you for the clinical experience yourself im not sure how difficult this will be but ill let you know when my pack comes through this morning. I too have tried to contact the head of nursing at the uce in birmingham where i study and he informed me that they dont do anything but to contact him again when i qualify as things may change, i am currently at the beginning of my 2nd year of training.
