Adult nurses wanting to work in the USA..

Hello all

I have been reading many of the posts on here about adult nurses who want to go work in the usa, but who are having difficulty because they lack hours in certain areas of nursing.

There is a place called Langara College in vancouver canada, it has an excellant course specifically for those nurses who need to make up the hours, this may be a bit long winded way around but it can get you what you need... it lets you take mini courses in paeds , obstetrics and mental health, each course has theory and clinical components, you can take the theory part of each course at home via distance learning and then once you have done all your theory you will sit an exam in your home country, upon passing they will let you proceed to go ahead with the clinical part of the course in which you will have to go spend approx 3 weeks in the designated clinical areas, to achieve the clinical hours you need, the clinical aspect is done in vancouver! after this course you will have the required hours you need to be able to register as a nurse in vancouver.... this is the way i am planning on doing it, as I have family in vancouver so i do not mind working there for a short while, the advantage is then i will have the required hours for applying to do the NCLEX .... Anyway I just thought I would share this info with those who wishto know where to make up hours from...because I can tell you now its going to be very hard trying to find a place in the UK! .. if anyone wants more information, please contact me via a pm, or here.

Hope this helps!

Hi TinaK,

I called Langara college in Canada but unfortunately they told me that they don't offer this course right now Does anybody have any other suggestions for finding another online university offering this one single course in Psychiatric Nursing online plus the possibility to do the clinical too? Thank you

Tina

Hi again mtroels

Your mistaken about the course being cancelled? which course did you ask for? I rang up myself and asked its the Registered nurse qualifying courses that run the programme i was telling you about, thats where you have to ring to, ...I asked them and they said the programme is still running! lol ...

Hi!

Really??? Oh my, well actually my husband called and he asked for the Mental Health course or Psychiatric nurse for the nursing program (he is a LPN nurse himself and I hate talking on the phone:)) and they told him it was not running at the moment. But I will call there again definitely...

Thank you

Hi TinaK!

I guess my husband maybe just called at the wrong place because we used the general number for the Langara College. I called there with the number you posted with the Homepage there and they told me they would do the course only that they were not sure whether the US would approve the course cause it is in Canada. Do you know anything about it? I have to call the Board of Nursing in California (where I applied) anyway to find out but just ask..Thanks again for your big help:)

I hate to throw a monkey wrench, in to the mix but all of you shouldd check with the state you plan to practice in. Here in the U.S. each state Board of Nursing sets the minimum nuber of hours in theory and clinica; practice.

Good luck

California will recognize any course done in Canada as long as they are in an approved school of nursing.

Thank you Suzanne:)

Hello tina

I'm so glad you rang to the right place! :) yes they still are doing the course, and Langara's courses at the college are an approved nursing school, the board of bc registration approve it, so you will be safe there :) when are you applying??

I am hoping to start taking the theory 6 months after i have my first nursing job over here as need to save up the money! :)

Hi TinaK,

I just called the Board of Registered Nursing in California and talked to the responsible person for my case and she told me that they do not accept long distance courses like that at Langara College. I am soo dissappointed. I just don't know what to do, I cannot find any place in New York and the only one that I found is Beth Israel Nursing School in New YOrk and they can only take me eventually for January and that is still 4 months! Then I will be seven months pregnant. I am sorry I am just so down, sometimes I really feel like giving up. I mean these people just give you just such a hard time.. Please please doesn't anyone now a place in New York for Psychiatric Nursing that offer this one single course? Thank you

Hey hun

Do you realise that the Langara college course , is not solely long distance?? its only the Theoretical component that is the distance learning part...to get your hours in the clinical side of psychiatry, you will have to go to vancouver and actually stay there for 3-4 weeks to do your clinical aspect of it, its not just a theory course it is both theory and practice, the california board probably thought it was just theory based which is why they said no....you should really ring up langara and find out everything first :)

Tina K

Hi TinaK!

I called LangaraCollege and got all the information, I know it is not entirely long distance and I explained the lady from the Board of Nursing exactly that I would go there for the clinical. She still told me that for the theoretical component they don't permit it because I would study at home and they require you to be there at the university for the theoretical course too.

She told me that they don't allow that students from California even so I don't know... Anyway I cannot do anything expect wait again like always I guess. I will continue my search on universities in New York.

Hiya

Can I ask...have you actually done your NCLEX yet?

Hi TinaK,

The evaluation process ended with the Board of Nursing telling me that to qualify for the NCLEX exam I need to do this one course. :)
