Hi everyone,
I am new to the forum and hope someone will be able to help with my questions.
1. I got accepted to Adelphi University accelerated nursing program recently and I really like this place and wish to study there but tuition simse to me SO high! It is 505$ per credit, so having 70 credits it will cost me around 40K.
Does anybody have experience with this particular college and know how people usualy cope with tuition cost.
2. I heard that many nursing students work. Could you advice me what kind of job is possible, what is the pay in LI region, is it possible to get tuition reimbursemnt through the hospital and if yes what hospitals you could recommend?
Any advice will be apriciated.
Thanks.

I'm not sure what the salary is for RNs on Long Island, but when I lived there, I was a medical secretary at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset. When I left the position, I was making $17.50/hour not bad since four years earlier when I started, I was making $13/hour. When I compare it to a similar position in Florida ($11.50/hour), I can cry. I'm sure that the nursing salary is significantly higher than FLA as well.
It is actually due to my past supervisor at NSUH that I've decided to pursue nursing. there are quite a few hospitals on LI and if you can, check with the larger health systems such as NSUH. Maybe they have some nurse recruiting options. Also, when you get into the program, there may be opportunities to get financing with the promise to work at one of the hospitals.
Just be prepared...cost of living is higher if you are looking to buy a house or rent within an apartment complex. If it is just for yourself, look into renting in a single family home which is very prevalent on Long Island and usually cheaper than a complex.
Good luck! I'm headed for LI on Thursday to visit family for the holidays.
Oh, I forgot...the traffic can be horrendous at times so be prepared. Many consider the LIE as a giant parking lot during rush hour!

my best friend is graduating from adelphi (just got pinned on friday ). she worked at st francis hospital (in roslyn) part time. the $ was not great, but they gave her a small amount of reimbursement (most places don't do that for part timers). they were very accomodating to her school schedule. she was also a 2nd degree student, and $$ was tough. she has quite a loan to repay, but i think she'll get some loan forgiveness. she will start working there as a nurse next month.
Don't forget to bundle up!!! (It's so gosh darn cold!! brrrrrrrrrr!!!!)

I graduated from the accelerated Rn-Bsn program at adelphi. It was soooo exspensive! I got tuition reimbursement of $5000/year, but I ended up paying for most of it out of pocket because I wanted to finish quicker. I worked full time while in school, it's doable. At the time I went (3 years ago) the program offered all the classes on wednesday, so I took that day off work and went to class all day. Also, they offer classes during the summer, which meet all day, one day a week for five weeks.

I called up Adelphi's Nursing office and the person who I spoke to told me that their accelerated program was a little over 15 months. I see on a few posts her that the accelerated program at Adelphi is about 2 and a half years. What is the real length of Adelphi's accelerated program?!?!?! Somebody fill me with the right answer. THANK YOU!!!

Hi,
I work at memorial sloan kettering cancer center in ny and they have a tuition program that gives up to 10,000 per year. I have personally taken advantage of this program to receive a Masters degree. The only thing is you have to be a full time worker to get that benefit. They have all types of positions available so maybe you should check it out. Also, it is a great place to work.
Hope that helps!!!

It IS 15 months! That other number you're getting is the complete without your prerequisites finished. I graduated from Adelphi's ASAP program and it is 15 months:) Good luck..
And the prerequisites for the accelerated BSN at Adelphi are.........?
I hear that you do not need statistics they will integrate in the program for you. No one seems to know the right answer.....hellllllllp!!!!

I know they were re-vamping the prerequisites and the program requirements which was going to take effect AFTER I graduated which was this past May. I had everything done. I had my chemistry finished, statistics which at the time, they DID require and they required I passed it with a C+ or better. I luckily passed with a C+, I hated that class:(
I had anatomy, physiology, micro and I even had nutrition, but they have their own that they require. I would recommend you finish your: anatomy, physiology, micro, statistics if you can and your chemistry. There is NOTHING WORSE than in your last semester, finiding out that you need that ONE class in order to graduate. And YES, it happens all the time with universitites. I swear it is like a plot to keep kids paying more and more money for their education.
The assistant dean, Nancy Cole is ONE HELLUVA AMAZING woman ( one of my favorites at that school) and I would recommend contacting her secretary (can't think of her name now, sorry) and ask her your questions. You might be lucky enough to get the assistant dean herself.
All of your questions will be answered, but make sure you're very thorough in everything you're asking for. It's all the red tape you don't want to deal with...you know?
Good luck..
You are the best student nurse bean. I bet you make quite the RN. Thank you again, this information helps so much.
I don't know how good of an RN I am. I've only been working less than 6 months. I'm very green. Anyhow, thank you and you're welcome:)
