Hey guys/gals I'm just wondering if their is anyone applying for this upcoming fy 2016 for direct commission into the navy. I guess I should have mentioned that I was referring to the nurse corps.
Hi Lasarazen. Thanks for your response. I have never been in the military so forgive me if I sound ignorant. What is scrolling? Also, my selection letter was dated July 29th. I heard from my detailer today that my documents were uploaded into some sort of govt system today. From the look of things, I doubt that I'll make the last ODS class for this FY.
As for terminating my lease early, I wrote a letter to my realtor about it and they told me they are required by law to cancel my lease if I have military orders to relocate. So that's more than $3k that I wouldn't have to pay for early lease termination. Although, from my discussions with other folks and your post, getting a place for a family of five on base can be quite difficult.
I actually got my orders on Monday. I had 2 of my 3 choices on my sheet. San Diego was all full and I choose Camp Pendleton to stay on the west coast. So they may give you a secondary choice to your first if it's in a similar location I guess. I was told once you get your scroll back it's a quick process after that. I talked with the detailer last Tuesday (or Wednesday, I've been on vacation.....) and I got my orders on Monday. Now reading those orders and deciphering what you have to do is a whole different beast. haha. Let's all hope you get your orders here!
My recruiter told me today that she had my commissioning documents but was yet to receive my orders. She told me I had to come back to the recruiting command for measurements to ensure I was still within standards. So what's the scroll?
Also, do you speak with the detailer to know where you're going before you sign the commissioning documents? Or after?
Yet another question: I am currently about to begin my second semester of grad school (acute care NP). My worry is that if I don't make the last ODS class, I may already be past the point where I can safely withdraw without messing up my transcript and having to repay student loans for the Fall semester. I was told by a LCDR that the Navy doesn't really utilize acute care NPs. So now I'm not sure what to do. And there's no guarantee I can get into USUHS after my first tour. Any advice will be welcome.
From what I found researching online is that the scroll goes all over DC and eventually gets to the Sec of Def and they sign off on your commission. I am not 100% sure on that but I can believe it since my scroll was submitted all the way back in June. I spoke with my detailer right after my recruiter got everything back. I am commissioning next Thursday and have orders in hand. So you SHOULD know that before you go... I am unsure about schooling and all of that, hoping to go back to school in a year or two, cross my fingers I can.... Hope I was able to help with some stuff!
Hey everyone! This post makes me so excited! I'm prior service, and recently decided to take the plunge and apply for DA. I have soooo many questions, but many of those are questions without a concrete answer.
How long did it take you, from your initial application to ODS? What was your hold up?
Is Critical Care harder to be accepted for than other specialties?
Does anyone have an active duty spouse? A piece of me is worried about co-lo even though we currently live in the area where one of my major naval hospitals is (which also happens to be one of major places for my husbands job).
My recruiter told me that since I am prior service and have held a clearance then my track should be faster than most, but I know nothing is ever promised.
I have worked in ICU for a little less than a year. I will complete CCRN as soon as possible, but not sure it will be before my kit is to the board.
Well I thought I typed up a long response to you but I guess it didn't like it... haha
I am going in coded under Critical care and maybe can shed some light but probably not a whole lot since I am so green at this whole thing! I grew up an Army brat but this is a whole different world.
I started the application last September/October. The longest wait was for the boards and then the whole scroll process after getting selected. I think the start of the paperwork and the speed depends on how fast your recruiter is.
I am working towards my CCRN and will be a main focus once I get to my first duty station. I think the main thing that will influence the chance is if there is a need that year. I was a 2016 alternate and 2017 primary but was moved up for one reason or another. and all of a sudden I am heading to ODS under a month of finding out I was moved to 2016. Hope this was useful and may shed some light or bring hope. I have searched around all over the internet and I still am looking for some answers that seems will only be answered by recruiter or someone at the first duty station! good luck!!
Hello SBSN. I started my application about a year ago. I was initially selected as an alternate but was bumped up to final select early this month. My selection letter was dated Jul. 29th. Part of the delay is that the boards don't sit as frequently as before so that added to the time. Good luck to you.
Hello all. I am at NMCP and graduated ODS at the end of June. I too was selected as an alternate for critical care in December but bumped up in January. I was told this was because green side bought up a bunch of critical care nurse billers which made the need even greater. I was told end of January, picked orders beginning of April, commissioned April 28 and left for ODS 20 May. Scroll is the lonest part because as a naval officers, you are approved by the secdef and POTUS. Congrats to you all that got picked up even sooner and enjoy the crazy, fun ride.

Just found out that I'll be going to Camp Pendleton (critical care) after the September 11th to October 14th ODS. Orders will be coming out mid next week according to the detailer. Hope to see you guys there!
