Active Duty Navy Direct Accession FY 2017

Greetings! I am a RN with about 1 years medsurg experience looking to apply for FY 2017 to the Navy for direct accession. Anyone else out there working on their packet or that have already submitted it? Please feel free share your experiences thus far, desired duty stations and any valuable info. Thanks!

I just got the below text from my recruiter this morning. Sounds like NCP is the culprit. Maybe we'll hear something by mid-December :)

"The last word I got on Friday, was the boards have not closed as scheduled. Meaning they are still looking at packages. The results were supposed to be out by now. But it looks like they're not going to come out this month. The results will not be released until the board closes. I believe the reason for the delay is the student programs, and the holiday. I will let you know more information as I get it."

Spoke with my recruiter two days ago and she said they got the results from the board that met in November this last Monday. However she said I probably wouldn't hear if I got in or not until mid January. Is this just because of the holidays? I'm confused as to why if they have their decision made it would take so long to let me know.

That seems a bit odd. My recruiter indicated that the results for Reserves had been released by the boards but nothing yet for Active Duty. I believe the people who applied for Reserves should know their selection status now and they receive a letter sometime in January. I applied in October for AD and I am still waiting for results to come out. He said hopefully end of the month but maybe into January. There are delays this time of year because they have to go through all of the NCP applicants first - that's only once per year so if they have a lot of applicants it can carry on into November. Plus the holidays.

Good luck.

Well that makes me feel a little better that it's not only me that's waiting. Maybe my recruiter meant the results from the reserves were in. Don't know why she would have worded it like that when I'm going active duty. I was just getting worried that she's been pushing the date that I'm going to hear back a few times.

Good luck to you too!

I know this waiting is killing us all! What speciality are you applying for Inhayes? I hope we can all get in and into the same ODS class together.

I applied for med/surg. I only have about a year and a half of experience and only in med/surg so I had to apply there. I'd love to get into trauma though. What speciality did you apply for?

Ya I was hoping to be going to ODS in feb but I don't think that's going to happen anymore! I hope we all get good news and soon!

I applied as med/surg too! Even though the hospital I work in is technically critical care the Navy credentialling office didn't see it that way apparently :( if I don't get in this go around I'll reapply once I have my CCRN... ICU or Trauma is my goal as well. Maybe we'll cross paths along the way! If I recall (from stalking the message boards over the last year) the February ODS class filled up last year pretty quickly from people selected at the end of the prior fiscal year. I'd bet April is more likely for any of us that get picked up this time of year. Still exciting though. Where are you hoping to head for duty station? I'm crossing my fingers for San Diego - I'm in AZ so I'd like to stay close to home for the first couple of years if I can to make the transition easy for my family, though we're all prepared to go where the Navy sends us.

Specializes in Adult Critical Care.

I can't speak for the Navy, but we in the Air Force have bad experiences with civilians coming from ICUs in community hospitals. Their skills just aren't translatable to the deployed setting.

Make sure you take an ICU job in a level 1 trauma center. Then there will be no doubt that your ICU experience will count. You need experience with mass transfusions, ventriculostomies, APRV ventilator settings and ARDS patients, flow tracs, CRRT/SLED, and patients on multiple vasopressors.

Surgery/trauma and Neuro ICUs are fantastic for these types of skills. Make sure you ask if these skills are available to you when you interview for jobs.

Jfratian thanks for the input. This is pretty much what I do now and have been doing for a little over a year now (straight out of nursing school as a new grad). We deal with very high acuity critically ill patients that come from all of the level 1/2 hospitals around town. but because my particular hospital (which is a private hospital inside of a level 1 trauma center) is considered a long term ICU type unit the Navy would not credential as critical care even though my day to day job entails that of an ICU/critical care nurse. It was a HUGE bummer. I'm trying to pick up a second or PRN job in an ER or ICU with a different facility to supplement experience... That said, I have a friend from nursing school that works in a Trauma ICU at a level 1 across town and he hasn't worked with a good deal of what I have.. still such a bummer they wouldn't let me make a case for different credentials just because it's long term Critical care. :( I figure it will work out how it's supposed to in the end.

I applied for ED/Trauma. I hear ED can mean anything from an urgent care type setting to a level 1/combat field hospital. No matter what i will be excited as long as I can get in. :)

I put San Diego as my first choice as well! But I am kinda hoping I get put in Maryland since I'm from New York and that's where my family is. But definitely willing to go wherever I'm told haha. I'm goosing we al hear good news in the next few weeks!

Anyone heard anything? I was hoping to hear something before the end of the year guess it'll be 2018.

Nada. I was hopeful as well but I'm guessing it'll be a couple more weeks at this point. Get through the new year holiday and everyone's vacations and what not. Kind of a bummer.
