Got the call today that I was selected for active duty med surg.. only open billets were Lemoore, CA, Portsmouth, VA and Camp Lejeune, NC. I think I'm headed to Camp Lejeune in June. ODS in April. Good Luck to everyone else. Hopefully news comes soon.

Anyone hear any news or status updates thus far this month from their recruiter? Mine is still radio silent

1. Talk to a medical recruiter. 2. Post-BSN nursing experience, good grades, letters of recommendation, and much much more. Talk a recruiter. 3. I believe there are options for this but I think you have to waive your ability to take a bonus if you take the loan repayment. A recruiter would be able to tell you what current incentives are available. 4. Yes, but you have to be in for a certain amount of time before you can apply (or maybe it's a certain rank before you can apply, like O3?) and then it's a time commitment.. I think 2 years for every 1 year of school.. 5. Ask a recruiter. 6. Not typically. 1 year of experience is preferred. 7. 12-18 months is typical from the time you start your application process 8. YES. Very competitive. 9. I don't think gender matters really. One additional thing you may want to ask a recruiter about is I believe the Navy has a policy about the maximum number of dependents you can have.. I thought it was 3 (i.e. spouse + 2 kids) otherwise you would have to request a waiver. Like I noted above, none of your experience (hospital or otherwise) will count towards your application in the Navy's eyes until AFTER your BSN unfortunately. So the 1 year experience starts from the time you get your BSN. 3.5 GPA is good. I would say get a hospital job as a BSN and start talking to a medical recruiter. Given the amount of time it takes to put your kit together and go through the whole process you may have a year experience by the time submitting to the board comes around (that's what happened to me).

Nada. I was hopeful as well but I'm guessing it'll be a couple more weeks at this point. Get through the new year holiday and everyone's vacations and what not. Kind of a bummer.

Jfratian thanks for the input. This is pretty much what I do now and have been doing for a little over a year now (straight out of nursing school as a new grad). We deal with very high acuity critically ill patients that come from all of the level 1/2 hospitals around town. but because my particular hospital (which is a private hospital inside of a level 1 trauma center) is considered a long term ICU type unit the Navy would not credential as critical care even though my day to day job entails that of an ICU/critical care nurse. It was a HUGE bummer. I'm trying to pick up a second or PRN job in an ER or ICU with a different facility to supplement experience... That said, I have a friend from nursing school that works in a Trauma ICU at a level 1 across town and he hasn't worked with a good deal of what I have.. still such a bummer they wouldn't let me make a case for different credentials just because it's long term Critical care. I figure it will work out how it's supposed to in the end.

I applied as med/surg too! Even though the hospital I work in is technically critical care the Navy credentialling office didn't see it that way apparently if I don't get in this go around I'll reapply once I have my CCRN... ICU or Trauma is my goal as well. Maybe we'll cross paths along the way! If I recall (from stalking the message boards over the last year) the February ODS class filled up last year pretty quickly from people selected at the end of the prior fiscal year. I'd bet April is more likely for any of us that get picked up this time of year. Still exciting though. Where are you hoping to head for duty station? I'm crossing my fingers for San Diego - I'm in AZ so I'd like to stay close to home for the first couple of years if I can to make the transition easy for my family, though we're all prepared to go where the Navy sends us.

That seems a bit odd. My recruiter indicated that the results for Reserves had been released by the boards but nothing yet for Active Duty. I believe the people who applied for Reserves should know their selection status now and they receive a letter sometime in January. I applied in October for AD and I am still waiting for results to come out. He said hopefully end of the month but maybe into January. There are delays this time of year because they have to go through all of the NCP applicants first - that's only once per year so if they have a lot of applicants it can carry on into November. Plus the holidays. Good luck.

It's possible but I would just prepare yourself for slower results. My package went to boards in October, and I think others here are Oct/Nov. From what we've all been told it seems this is fairly common this time of year. Fingers crossed we'll hear something by year end but I wouldn't be surprised if it slips into Jan or Feb at this rate. And from what I've been told you'll just hear if you've been selected by then (yes/no). You probably wouldn't commission or start working on orders (duty station, ODS, etc) for several weeks after that when the actual detailer contacts you. Good luck!

I am from the Phoenix area. I'm working with CPO Fleming at the Tempe office. Are you applying for active duty or reserves? He said hopefully we'll hear in the next couple of weeks before Christmas.

I applied for active duty - I'm former enlisted Army so my plan is to go back and do the full retirement gig, eventually apply for DUINS and get my NP with a specialty in Emergency and Trauma medicine. Because I applied for DA right out of school (a year ago), my application technically went in as general/med-surg.. When they did my credentialing they said they don't consider the hospital I work in critical care for some reason so they couldn't credential me in that area, though I now have ~1 yr experience. Which is unfortunate because the work I do really is critical care (vents, drips, high acuity patients, etc.).. I'm working on my CCRN right now - My recruiter said just get in the door and then communicate with the nurse in charge at my first duty station and try and get in an ICU :) Fingers crossed. That would be a nice Christmas present indeed!

I just got the below text from my recruiter this morning. Sounds like NCP is the culprit. Maybe we'll hear something by mid-December :) "The last word I got on Friday, was the boards have not closed as scheduled. Meaning they are still looking at packages. The results were supposed to be out by now. But it looks like they're not going to come out this month. The results will not be released until the board closes. I believe the reason for the delay is the student programs, and the holiday. I will let you know more information as I get it."
