Ack! Paying the price for honesty about Depression Diagnosis

Published

Here's my problem: the local hospital is waiting on to hear if I will accept the position they offered me....I am waiting on my temp nursing license for this state...today I recv'd information from the board of nursing saying that they need a detailed history of my counseling and something from my counselor saying I am stable and compliant with treatment (for depression and PTSD)...then they can issue the nursing permit...so...my counselor is on holiday all week...but I do not want to reveal to my prospective employer that the board of nursing is waiting on my mental health records.

I want to accept the position but how do I explain the delay in my temp permit?

I wish I had not answered the question on the application regarding being in treatment!

I was interested as I hold licenses in a few different states, looking at 3 of them only one specificly asks on the application about mental illness or disease. The other two made no mention of it or other health problems that would effect ones preformance. I do believe though that the practice acts of the other 2 states make mention to being judged mentally defective which is different than having a mental illness.

Rj:rolleyes:

Can I just say thank you to the orginal poster? I have PTSD and suffered from depression after the death of my spouse. I have learned from your post that perhaps admitting my PTSD to the BON may not be in my best interest. I could see the value if I were still in treatment but since I haven't been in years, I think I'll keep that tidbit of info to myself.

People have PTSD for many many reasons. You'd think the BON would look at an admission with favor because at least we went for help. Disclosing to your employer is optional. It's no different than disclosing any illness. You have to tell your H/R folks if it will impact your ability to perform your duties-otherwise you don't owe any explanation.

Breathe, this too shall pass.

Granny...

I did not mean to diminish others in any way shape or form.

Your comment about "problems that anyone who suffers from a chronic illness" was exactly my concern. If they suffer from a physical impairment, which could affect their ability to perform their job, why are they not required to the BON, why those with mental impairments are? It is this unequal treatment that I have a problem with.

That being said, this disparate treatment is of course not unique to this situation.

Surprise, surprise, a number of states are changing their rules, driving, nursing practice, etc. I suffer from a seizure disorder, which I must report to both my BON and DMV. I am also an insulin dependent diabetic. Fortunately or unfortunately, my state does not require I report that disorder or its potential impact on my life style. To be honest, I do not believe that any illness should be reportable to the BON, unless there is clear evidence of it interferring with the nurse's ability to function as a nurse.

In my opinion if everyone was completley honest and told they had some sort of reportable illness. We would have no working nurses. I'll never tell my buisness to the BON or employer period.

You would be surprised at the problems that anyone who suffers from a chronic illness or disability undergoes. Please do not assume that mental illness is the only problem.

So true, grannynurse. I'm in that boat right now. I don't want to play down meerkat's problems with getting a job, but physical disabilities really can be a problem when it comes to getting a job.

Best of luck to you, Meerkat. Everyone's given such great responses. And this time of year, it's easy for a hospital to understand that the person you're waiting on is on vacation. Well, maybe not easy, but it's more understandable.

I'm rooting for you! I hope that everything goes well and you get this job!!

I went for an interview today and was offered the job but I was shocked at what was asked on the application. You are asked to sign a paper for consumer credit reporting as follows.

"There are many types of consumer reporting agencies that sell information about check writing histories, medical records, and rental history records)."

"Please be advised that we may also obtain an investigative report including information as to your character, general reputation, personal characteristics, and mode of living. This information may be obtained by contacting your previous employers or references supplied by you."

Now that scares the ^&/? out of me. Not that I have done anything wrong, but your character, mode of living, etc. How far do they dig into this stuff? What if there is a neighbor that you didn't get along with, what if someone at work has a grudge against you?

I have worked armed security and they do their background investigations and security checks. But I think some employers don't do more than fax a request to the DOJ to get something that says there is no derogatory information about you.

Then on this same sheet they say "we MAY procure a consumer report on you." So they may or may not?

Scary! What do you think?
