Accepted Columbia ETP applicants (and current students: some advice). get-together?

Nursing Students Post Graduate

:welcome: Hi everyone! I thought it might be a good idea to get our own separate thread for those accepted to Columbia ETP! Sure we have a lot to discuss!

I would also like to invite current students to this topic to share your experiences and answer some questions.

Here is one question that is really bothering me.

I have been working and studying simultaneously for the past 4 years, and to tell the truth I am really tired. Will financial help from Columbia (both scholarship and loans) allow me to only study? In particular, how much money do they give every month for living expenses? If you feel uncomfortable writing about it in public, personal messages are welcome too

Aside from this, - congrats to all those accepted and really looking forward to meeting you! :balloons:

Oh, by the way, I am Women's Health! What about you?;)

Dear BeaconStreet:

I was at the info session on Friday and was very impressed by Columbia. I was curious what the leader of your tour group said about why she picked Columbia over other schools. I am trying to decide between two schools right now...Yale and Columbia. I already put my deposit in for Yale because it was due earlier but I am seriously having a HUGE problem deciding between the schools. Both are obviously great. Anyone have advice or find themselves in a similar situation? Help!!!

Hi chickpea- I am in a similar dilemma with Columbia and UCLA. I don't hear from UCLA until the end of March and since the deposit for Columbia is due the 15th, I'm in a bind. It's a little stressful, but I think I'm going to put the deposit down regardless. Columbia's program, staff and students really impressed me. My tour guide was choosing between Yale and Columbia and decided on Columbia because the program is so flexible (you can take a year off after the first year, come back and start the specialty portion) where at Yale its a straight 3 years. Hope that helps!

does anyone know if you can get your deposit back if you don't end up going? I'm still debating and I'm not sure, but I don't want to miss my chance.

This is so stressful.

I'm fairly certain the $500 deposit is non-refundable. It's a lot of money to put down if you choose to go somewhere else. Good luck with your decision!

Hi,

I also went to the March 2nd welcome session, and it helped me make my final decision and chose Columbia. I was impressed by the current students and the administration.

Is anyone considering buying a PDA or digital voice recorder? Or if you have one, which is the best?

Thanks!!

Hi! My tour guide said that you don't need a PDA until the 2nd year when you start the specialty phase so I'm going to hold off on that expense. I am going to get a voice recorder though because I heard that you really need it because the profs whiz through the material. I'm looking at this model here.

Thanks, T-Rock.

I think I will hold off on the PDA, too, until next year. We have enough things to buy right now just to get started with the program.

Here's another question (I really wish I had gone to the visiting day!)

Do any of you know whether or not we'll be able to shadow NPs during the BSN portion, just to get the jist of what they're doing? I am not 100% sure of my currently chosen specialty and since it's pretty easy to switch, I really want to take a look at one other area before making my final decision...

Thanks!

I think that may be what the spring semester "nursing practice integration" is all about, but I am not 100% sure on that.

Question:

my financial aid package included about $73,000 in loans for the first year alone. I know there are loan repayment programs out there, but I worry, are they enough to pay off $150,000 in debt total? That seems quite intimidating and almost impossible to pay off! How do you all plan to pay off your debt? I already have about $20,000 from undergrad. I don't want money to keep me from pursuing my degree, and Columbia is my top choice, but I don't want to make a mistake and never be able to recover from the debt.

Nursing practice integration is where you shadow an RN and eventually take over his/her duties.

Hello everyone! I'm new to this website, but so thankful that I found it. I'm still debating about Columbia (I know, the deadline is FAST approaching)... I may just send the deposit and if I decide on going elsewhere, then I'll just deal with the loss. Anyway... I wanted to see if there were a lot ETP students coming from California?! What is everyone doing about housing?! I didn't get to attend the info day so I wasn't fortunate enough to see the dorms, which from what I read are very similar to what I saw during undergrad. Anyway. Looking forward to hearing the replies.
